Maulidi accused of favouring PP aspirant in BT Malabada

Tension has erupted in Blantyre Malabada constituency as Peoples Party (PP) aspirants accuses the party’s secretary general Paul Maulidi of favouring one candidate Noria Kachali.

The ruling party is expected to conduct primary elections in the constituency tomorrow Sunday to elect the party representative in the area for May 20 tripartite elections.

Inside sources within the party confided to Nyasa Times that, Maulidi is influencing the region committee members to favour Kachali.

“The party is using a Mr Kadamanja who is Blantyre district governor to create additional areas to vote for Kachali who is currently close to SG Maulidi,” said one of sources.

He said the unfair game started way back when the party’s president Joyce Banda conducted a rally in Nyambadwe where she only recognised Noria Kachali in the front of other two candidates.

The three candidates namely Noria Kachali, Blantyre based private lawyer Chimwemwe Kaluwa and Benadetta Limani are to battle it out for Blantyre Malabada constituency currently being represented by DPP member, Aaron Sangala.

The source further said the Secretary General has gone to an extent of providing party resources to the lady in support of her campaign to woo more votes.

“Just imagine the party is giving her iron sheets under Mudzi Transformation Trust which she is distributing under a disguise that its her personal donation,” he said.

Another party official who refused to be named said the party was also using director of youth, Lemani Chapitapansi to garner support from the opposition DPP and UDF youths to vote for Noria during the primaries.

” They have made a plan that if things goes against Noria these young people from UDF and DPP should cause violence so that the next step the SG will announce Noria as winner” he said.

Noria Kachali is said to be related to the President Banda.

But in an interview Maulidi described the allegations as baseless, saying he is not playing any role to support Kachali.

“During the mass rally in the constituency I showed all the candidates so is a total lie to say l am favouring one candidate by the name of Noria,” Maulidi said.

He also dismissed allegations that the party was creating some areas to vote for Noria.

And when asked whether Noria out of 3 candidates was given responsibility to distribute iron sheets under Mudzi transformation Trust, the PP secretary general said it was not new as ‘this happens elsewhere’.

“When you have access to the president you can always beg for things that your constituents want and Noria took that initiative to ask the president for a help and that’s nothing new,” he said.

PP on Sunday will conduct primary elections in southern region in 54 constituencies.
