Mayaya scolds Mutharika as ‘headless chicken’ leading Malawi

  • Stop being obsessed with Joyce Banda –Malawi News column

Human rights activist Billy Mayaya  tore into Malawi President Peter Mutharika through Facebook saying he is running around being hero-worshipped yet he is like ‘a headless chicken’.

Mayaya was referring to waste of tax-payers money for Mutharika’s second anniversary of his arrest on treason charge.

“There was once a headless chicken; an expert in law; who grew up to lead us all; what I don’t understand; what compelled such a man; to spend money to sign an old wall?” Mayaya posted on his Facebook page in apparent reference to Mutharika’s graffiti at his jail cell.

“Malawi is facing the biggest economic crisis in its history and we have a crisis of leadership! The commemoration of his stint at Lumbadzi Police Station shows a lack of leadership,” Mayaya further wrote on Facebook.

“Malawians are tired of seeing their hard earned tax going to fluffy events. Teachers haven’t been paid; there are no medicines in hospitals and meanwhile our leader is having a party! So the question is: Are we safe?” wondered Mayaya.

Mutharika has been widely criticised for his arrest commemoration with commentators saying it was glorifying mediocrity.

A Malawi News column, ‘Hitting the Nail’ by George Kasukula said Mutharika’s action was “not presidential.”

He wrote: “It is partisan politics meant to exact a vendetta on political enemies at a time when the President is supposed to be mending fences and building bridges.”

The columnist stressed that the ruling DPP “should get on with the task of governing this country and stop being obsessed with Joyce Banda. The election took place in May (2014) and Joyce Banda left State House.”

Kasakula hit hard with the fact that when the final chapter of the country’s history is written, names such as Kamuzu Banda will not be missed for championing independence from colonialists such as Bakili Muluzi and Chakufwa Chihana for ending one-party rule to usher in democracy but Peter Mutharika is “not a hero yet.”

He wrote that Mutharika has “done nothing extraordinary to warrant a space in our history” and that the cronies should not cheat him.
