MCP candidate seeks naval base in Nkhata Bay

Opposition Malawi Congress party (MCP) parliamentary hopeful for Nkhata Bay Central constituency Dillah Nyimba said he would prod government to consider establishing a naval base at Sanje in Nkhata Bay as one way of enhancing protection of Lake Malawi.

“There is lots of idle space at Sanje and the place has not major developments for years,” he said.

Nyimba, a former Soldier with the Malawi Defence Force, said the lake border row with neighboring Tanzania is justification enough for Malawi to have more than naval bases.

“At the moment Malawi does not have adequate security on its Lake and that’s not good for a country,” he claimed.

Malawi currently has a naval base at Monkey Bay.

Nyimba said this during road shows he held at Pundu, Chiphazi, Mkondezi, Mgolozela and Nkhata Bay Boma.

He said the naval base from enhancing security, it will also create jobs and business opportunities hence improving peoples’ lives.

“It’s obvious that such a huge public infrastructure project will bring with it good road roads, electricity and water. People will also benefit from these services,” Nyimba said.

MCP Regional Chairperson for the north Bazah Kaunda urged MCP supporters to desist from violent acts saying MCP is a peaceful party.

“If you are beaten or if you die that will be your problem and we will not be involved,” Kaunda said.

He then asked leaders to tell people the truth saying if they have nothing to say they should not hold rallies.
