Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has endorsed the candidature of its Vice President Richard Msowoya for the post of Speaker of National Assembly.

The party parliamentary Caucus in Lilongwe on Sunday chaired by its president Lazarous Chakwera –set to assume leader of opposition title- agreed that all other MCP candidates will not contest.

And Msowoya has also confirmed with Nyasa Times that he will contest for the post after getting the backing of his party.

“I am in the race for the Speaker. The MCP Caucus has approved my name,” said Msowoya.

Parliament elects among its members a Speaker and two deputy speakers during the first session of a new National Assembly after a general elections.

The House in Malawi sits from Monday where the Speaker and two deputies will be elected.

And former vice-president Khumbo Kachali is also vying for the post.

Former Speaker Henry Chimunthu-Banda has given tips on who should be elected head of the legislative arm of government, saying a Speaker must possess such qualities as “fairness, good judgment, decisiveness, patience and a good sense of humour.”

Chimunthu said a Speaker must be fair and impartial to sustain the trust of members on both sides of the House.
