The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will hold Local Government by-elections in five wards between June and July this year and the calendar for the by-elections will be released “soon”.

The by-elections are expected to take place at Luchenza, Zomba Central, Nsikizi Ward in eastern district of Mangochi, Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu and Khwawa Ward in Karonga, according to MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa.

This follows the death of councillors in the respective wards.

Mwafulirwa said consultations are underway to determine how much resources will be required for the by-elections.

“This calendar will show the actual dates when registration and voter verification, nomination, campaign and polling will take place,” he said.

He, however, said the electoral body is heavily counting on government and that they expect enough allocation of resources to the Commission in 2015/16 fiscal budget.

“We have a draft budget on whose basis we have engaged the Ministry of Finance for funding. Discussions are ongoing and once finalized we will release the figures to the public,” said Mwafulirwa.

He said at the moment they are finalizing payments of honoraria for all polling staff that worked during the 2014 May polls.

He also said all political parties will be officially communicated to regarding the by-elections in due course.
