Media Council accredits professional journalists in Malawi
Media Council of Malawi (MCM) , a body that looks into issues of journalism ethics, complaints, arbitration and accreditation, on Tuesday said accreditation exercise which started in order to flash out bogus journalists is going on well.
Councils Executive Director Vales Machila told Nyasa Times in a interview in Lilongwe that the exercise is crucial because it will help in recognition and identification by members of the public.
He said the accreditation exercise will help “minimize cases of impersonation of professional journalists by individuals who jump from one event to another masquerading as reporters.”
Machila said all names of accredited journalists will be published in the media so that organizations should not allow anybody not accredited to practice in Malawi.
Police has been arresting various people for the offense of impersonation.
In 2009 almost a good number were arrested for posing as Nyasa Times reporters.
Another journalist was also arrested for posing as Daniel Nyirenda, the then editor of the Blantyre Newspapers Limited(BNL).
