Ajibu Ali was installed last Sunday by minister of Local Government Kondwani Nankhumwa at a brief ceremony the government funded in the name of Ndamo sya Ayao, a cultural grouping of the Yao clan across the country.

The installation of Ali as the new Makanjira chief follows the death of the previous chief in 2015, which led to the chieftaincy wrangle.

Ndamo sya Ayao chairman Stephen Shabani confirmed the ceremony was meant for his organisation was equally surprised that it was the installation of the chief.

“But we do not have any problems because the installation of a Yao chief is part of our mandate,” he said.

Soon after the chief was installed, there were no speeches as is normally the case and the crowd, including the minister dispersed as soon as they could in fear of a rival group that was not informed of the event.
