Ministry donates cash towards boxing in Mzuzu
Malawi’s Ministry of Sports on Sunday donated K20 000 towards the renovation of a ring at Obrigado Leisure Centre in Mzuzu as a way of promoting the boxing sport in the region.
The donation, made by the ministry’s representative Jane Nhlane, was made during a bout at the Centre where Lastone Kayira – a Mzuzu based boxer – beat Jobson Adams from Lilongwe in an eight round match courtesy of Baghdad Mwamulima Boxing Promotions.
Nhlane told Nyasa Times that the ministry was “overwhelmed with the strides in boxing taking place in the northern region.”
She said “it was inspiring that businesspersons were investing” in the sport.
Baghdad Mwamulima Boxing Promotions director Baghdad Mwamulima thanked the ministry for the donation but asked it “to do more.”
He said it was the “duty of government” to support people like them.
“I’ve been promoting boxing in the region since 2014, and there is so much talent that needs to be unearthed and exposed to the international world. With the help of government we can,” said Mwamulima.
The winner, Kayira, carted home K80 000 while Adams went home K70 000 richer.
Boxing is making extraordinary headway progress in the northern region following various businesspersons that have showed interest to support the support.
