Misa-Malawi urges Mutharika to reverse MBC boss’s re-deployment

The Malawi chapter of the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA-Malawi) on Tuesday called on President Peter Mutharika to reverse his decision on the redeployment of Dr. Benson Tembo from Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) to the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA).

Tembo: Moved

Tembo: Moved

Tembo was a Director General at MBC and has since been redeployed to MACRA as an Advisor on Digital Migration.

MISA-Malawi Chairperson Thom Khanje said in the commercial city of Blantyre on Tuesday that his organization is disappointed with the decision and find the removal as retrogressive and a sign of continued political interference by the government in the operations of MBC.

“This is contrary to the promise by President in both his inaugural and first State of the Nation Address to Parliament in June and July 2014 that MBC will work independently,” he said.

He added that the President should always make sure that he lives by his words and desist from making decisions that are contrary to his promises.

“ Let the MBC board independently assess his performance for possible re-engagement when his contract expires in April this year,” he suggested.

MISA-Malawi re-affirms its standing position on the need for MBC to be freed from political interference by reviewing the Communications Act to turn the corporation into a public service broadcaster which serves the needs of all Malawians regardless of their political affiliation, he said.

  1. Malawian says:

Malawians lets learn to accept change. Benson Tembo has in fact overworked at MBC, as if there are no well trained Malawian who can take over from very old guys. It is high time that he should become an entreprenuer and employ other Malawians. What else does he need, he also went to the embassy for christ sake is that not enough. Malawians are beginning to suggest that a public official should hold the same position for life, which is very wrong. These of you who have never worked in government should be schooled that it is a norm, according to MPSR, for public servant to be shifted from one organisation to another with the realm of the public sector regardless of the position one is holding.

  2. Big Man wankulu says:

Bwana Tembo, you have provided an esteemed service at MBC since 70s. No need to worry or regret. Just move on. Ntchito zabwino onse akudziwa. Sometimes things happen for a reason. serve the country in another capacity. There are many public servants who have experienced this. Ubwino wake mwachoka bwino. Enjoy your advisor retirement package. No issue here MISA, ena ayese nawo alephere awone. Big up big man.

  3. victim Chamkhuni Lwazazi says:

    H Kamdidi,
So it’s true DPP government wants Malopa back at MBC? That would be hell for Malawians.
Malopa has no manners, no dignity, full of deceit, selfish and childish. He contributed
to cheating late Bingu, and the president’s collapse. Not Malopa, please!!!

  4. mcwinfore mwausegha says:

Today is HIM but tomorrow will be THEM ,you played your part during JBS 3yrs ruring not now .Working as a puppet under the armpits of HIMSELF .Let them watch MBC as a family TV for the broadcaster.

  5. Sinthani says:

Dr. Tembo has over-lived his usefulness at MBC and there is need to inject new blood in the top echelon of this institution. However, it should not be Malopa again!!

  6. mulungu akuona says:

Am greatly worried of when malawi leaders will ever leave independent organisations independent. Our leaders always look out for people based on their political affiliations to be leaders rather than well equiped persons.when will YOU “whom you call urselves leaders of this nation” ever stop coaxing.if you are given the jurisdiction to choose leaders, please consider those who lifted you up there. Let only the TRUTH prevail. Mind you, being a leader doesnt mandate you to violite our rights of having access to information that is real NOT YOUR LIES..

  7. Alufeyo says:

Tembo was handpicked so there is no problem removing him. He is also on a fixed term contract which means govt is at liberty not to renew his contract without explaining why. Dont accept free jobs pse compete.

  8. Ma says:

Benson Tembo thought he was on top of things. He sided with DPP during election defrauding excercise now?????? Thats the Mutharika family mphwanga sayamika umfunse Bakili…..

  9. its high time politicians should stop interfearing in mbc operations. Let the president walk with the talk.

  10. chinkombaleza gumanyundo gowa says:

MISA MALAWI learn to explain clearly why you feel this is retrogressive as a reader of this page I want elaboration before I can comment.

  11. H Kamdidi says:

Hello Misa Malawi! When the MBC DG was being appointed by Joyce Banda to replace Malopa, you were quite, you did not say anything on the firing of Malopa and the appointment of Tembo. Now, Tembo has been moved to another place and you are crying all over! kkkkkkkkkkk! In the first place, it just pleased the appointing authority to put Tembo as MBC DG, he never went through any interview process which is necessary for professionalism anywhere. This being the case, he was hand picked….political appointment, as such I do not think it is necessary to make noise on it as the same appointing authority (not person) has moved him,….that is typical of political appointments. Does he wants to be at MBC or he wants employment?

This guy Tembo behaved foolishly when he refused to broadcast live the press statement by Joyce Banda during the election impasse in May, he was trying to strategize himself to settle down with his new expected boss, APM after seeing that JB was winning! He thought by doing so he would look professional to APM and secure his job with him. This behavior showed that he was insubordinate to the appointing officer as such he could not be trusted as he may do the same to the current one, hence he has been moved! At least he has not been fired! But with the MISA Malawi noise, the authority may not renew his contract to prove that he is in charge and that nobody can push him around!

  12. tsetsefly says:

The difference btwn the former DGs of MBC and Benson Tembo is that the former were puppets who always aired what gvt wanted to hear. Benson is the only DG who tried hard to move MBC away from unwarranted political influence. We all clapped hands when Pita said he was going to uphold that independence but alas!!!! old habits die hard. DPP can not stand the new meadi understanding hence the pushing away of a good man. Wait and see the replacement. I am 100% sure that they are looking for a boot licker, a handclapper, an asshole wiper who will alway take orders from this bunch of fooling and clueless ruling elite.

  13. joseph banda says:

#31 Abiti, Please show the nation your annual assessment on B Tembo. I think Thom Khanje is just very excited and lack of Managerial acumen for the post. He is just excited. How can you tell the head of State to reverse a decision. Kodi Malawi muno muli a Kape ambiri eti (CK publications).

  14. Hebrews says:

Who deployed Chimwemwe Banda to Ministry of Information? Was it DPP led government? What did MISA say about that deployment? Whats wrong you guys with DPP. If another government does that, its normal but when DPP does it then you start crying?????

  15. Wanex banda says:

    What sin has he committed?

  16. Hu Jintao says:

The idea that all institutional position should hinge on the mercy of one person, the republic’s made almighty is killing the spirit of individual’s ability to work freely in any given institution.

I think Mr Kanje is naive in demanding the reversal on the decision the president made. Let the decision stand and nobody should query him any more on this matter.

But what we can do is to change the fundamentals that govern the recruitment of parastatal heads (directors and departmental heads)

Let us look forward to change this country. What do we want to see happen to our country? What exactly is not making everything seem right? That is what we need to do.

Even if we say we the board should make a decision on this, the board itself is is appointed by the same old person. The board therefore has limited powers on such matters.

I will outline a few major changes that this country needs.

  19. ujeni says:

The day Sumbuleta was appointed as Deputy Director of MBC, i concluded that this small Country full of Mozambicans in Mulanje and Thyolo has gone crazy. This is like appointing Joe Gwaladi as Reserve Bank Deputy Governor and expect him to implement effective monetory policies, how?

  20. hfty says:

Malawi govt is laughable, abale sumbuleta ndi munthu ompatsa udindo

  21. Nyapamphi says:

MISA too much, is there any agreement for to be in the office for his life? Many DGs were removed like Rodrick Mulonya, Kenson Mbwana Bright Malopa e.t.c who is Benson Tembo to be in the office for his life.

  22. ABITI says:

ABWANA PITALA TITHANDIZENI, MUKACHOTSA MUNTHU UYU PANO MUDZIWE KUTI MBC MWAIWONONGA, the people you think are trustworthy by telling you miseche will end up destroying mbc and in the long run destroying you as President politically and the whole DPP. so watch out on your decision Bwana, musamvere miseche ya anthu osakufunirani zabwino masquarading ngati DPP die hards, bwana ukupweteketsani with silly decisions about MBC

  29. Peter says:

I think people at MBC forgot the character of DPP. They supported them but now they all have no option but to put on blue clothes to safeguard there work. Those who were able to freely express themselves are now scared of doing the same. Zofuna izi simunati Ena mupita Ku kaning’ina.

Am not for this MISA proposal/idea and I as a Malawian voter do urge APM not to bow down to this demand by MISA/Malawi. This issue in as far as I know is somehow being personalised by some individuals within MISA Malawi chapter especially at MBC.

There use to be some crucial and sensitive issues whereby the President can bow down to but not this one. What these individuals wishing for the reversal must know is that the President has powers to hire or fire any employee basing of reasonable facts. What they must know is that Government must have some sort of discipline in its system.

My advice to APM is that sometimes kuoneka wa nkhaza ndi bwino chifukwa anthu/a nthchito amagwira ntchito mokhulupirika ndi mwa mwambo. Osamangogonjera zina zili zonse ayi mapeto ake mudzagwetsa nawo boma zimenezi.

Tembo is willing to face new challenges! Let his decide for himself; rather than self appointed surrogates. In today’s world, it is a big mistake to think a position is more than temporary. We should all be prepared to move on sooner or later.
    Tembo has the right mindset!

  48. The Truthful One from the West says:

MBC is now back to Bingu DPP era. I know that Dr Tembo as a true professional is not happy. Aubrey Sumbuleta the DPP stooge is to take over.

  49. Koma Inu says:

This DPP party is operating on miseche/gossip. The party is busy changing people around to replace them with their own people. What these DPP people are doing is very bad and people are watching. Even in government, they are busy shifting people around, in some cases, moving well qualified people to positions they are not trained for. You ask why Malawi is not developing? The answer is politics, so selfish, nepotism, should I mention greedy? May be I should say too much love for money instead of serving the public. Why should nepotism be part of running government.
