Miss Curvy Malawi auditions start Jan 26

Auditions for the Miss Curvy Malawi, a newly introduced competition for ‘curvy’ women, have been scheduled to start next week in Lilongwe.

According to organisers of the contest, Excite Media, the inaugural auditions are set to take place on Saturday, 26 January, at Bridge View Hotel in the capital city.

Next will be Blantyre and all interested curvy women should get ready as they will be given the chance to audition on 02 February at Malawi Sun Hotel. Finally the crew will be going to the North on 9 February at Mzuzu Hotel in Mzuzu.

Miss Curvy Malawi finals are expected to be held on 13 April at the magnificent Presidential Conference Centre in the capital.

Liabuba: Miss Curvy Malawi auditions start Jan 26

“Miss Curvy girls look healthy, confident and demonstrate style and poise in a collection of different designs and outfits,” says Excite Media communications manager Diana Liabuba.

She told Nyasa Times: “We are really looking for girls and women who are proud and confident with their shape. We are not looking for skinny waifs, but women who are at least a size 10, the curvier the better.”

Whist the competition is not targeting models, Excite Media has however revealed that there has been significant interest from professional models throughout the country, clamouring to get involved.

The first of its kind in Malawi, the pageant is open to women aged between 18 and 28. They must also have a minimum of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), a
42 inch hip size, flat tummy and should not be less than 1.7 metres tall.

With regional heats all over the country and a celebrity sprinkled final, the competition is set to become an annual high class event. The theme of this year’s Miss Curvy Malawi is “Celebrating real women and their natural shape”.

“This is a place where women could be admired and recognised for their shapely curves and natural gifts, women who are proud of their curves and are not afraid to show them,” said Liabuba.

The ultimate winners of Miss Curvy Malawi will receive a package of prizes including personal coaching and support in body image and modelling presentation.

A prospective modelling contract and portfolio, cash gifts, hair and beauty treatments and of course instant celebrity status with the title of Miss Curvy Malawi, are also in the offing.

On top, the winner and her First Princess will for the first time represent Malawi at Miss Curvy Africa 2013, to take place on 13 August at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Miss Curvy Africa is organized by Africa Beauty Association (ABA) and it is a beauty pageant for the Hour Glass Models (Curvy Models).

The pageant seeks to celebrate African beauty through appreciating a uniquely built figure.

“Most pageants celebrate slenderness and pretty faces, which is a more Westernized way of appreciating beauty,” observes ABA.

“Most Africans are uniquely built but that does not make them less attractive, in fact, they are beautiful in their own right so the Miss Curvy competition honours beautifully built African women and they are called glass models.”
