Molliati, Kayuni to meet in re-match: Malawi boxing

Lightweight belt holder Crispin Molliati from Kamuzu Barracks Boxing Club and his challenger Malani Kayuni from Blantyre will have to square it up again in the ring after their title bout was declared a draw.

The two rival boxers met in a 12-round title bout at Summit Cultural Centre in Biwi, Lilongwe on Sunday and the bout was declared a draw.

During the bout, Kayuni, young brother to local boxing king Osgood ‘Punisher’ Kayuni dominated the early rounds before falling prey to his opponent during the closing rounds. By the time the final bell rang, Kayuni was about to be knocked out but the bout was still declared a draw following the challenger’s impressive show in the early rounds.

The young punisher was clearly leading in points by the end of round seven but he lost steam in the final rounds and was saved from being knocked out by the final bell.

Organisers of the bout, Fast Sports Boxing Promotions from Lilongwe have since disclosed they will be arranging a re-match at a later date.

Sunday’s result means Molliati has defended his Lightweight belt, which he pegged at K150,000. His challenger got K100,000.
