We Malawians need to realise that we are a poor country and need to strategically use effective but cost cutting technologies so that we can save and then improve our lives. Use of the three wheelers is very much in order. We also need to borrow a leaf from China, india, Malaysia, Thailand and even Tanzania by making use of Bicyles, scooters, small efficient vehicles. we need to save and not drive or get driven in expensive vehicles as if we are Americans or Germans. So on a good day, a tricycle operator makes about K20 000 and yet he gets paid K20 000 a month? This is the zenith of exploitation! Assuming kuti woyendetsa a tricycle works 25 days a month, he makes K500 000 for his employer, of which he only gets 4%. These Lebanese and Indians must give better deals to our sons please abale. Its high time that the Taxi Drivers and Owners sit down to check their pricing.
It’s either you bring down prices or re-invent yourselves! You are slowly getting caught up in a whirlpool of market forces. It’s all about competitiveness. Life is too expensive in Malawi for people to rely on taxis when tinjinga and yobanduka abound!
Daniel has got it all wrong. He thinks the tricycles are a replacement of the taxis. What he doesnt know is that the two teams are serving two totatlly different clienelle. In Uganda, they are a nuisance, they dont follow road rules or regulation. Criss crossing anyhow, typical confused African society, complete chaotic. Ban them in Malawi before we go that route
