Mponela man gets 8 years jail for defilement

Mponela First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced a 27 year old man to 8 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 13 year old school going girl.

Police spokesman for Mponela station  Kondwani Kandiado identified the convict as Justin Levison who hails from Wadala village in the area of Traditional Authority Dzoole in Dowa.

“He was arrested on August 10 this year after we received a complaint that the man had defiled the girl who is a Standard Six pupil at Diliro Primary School,” said Kandiado.

According to the publicist, the court heard that just a day before the suspect’s arrest he offered a bicycle lift to the girl (name withheld) whose bike had developed a fault on her way from Mponela Trading Centre.justice

“On their way home after crossing Kasangazi River, the man stopped his bike and started demanding sex from the girl. He forced her to the ground, ordered her to undress and then defiled her,” explained Kandiado.

He added: “She cried for help but unfortunately nobody came to her rescue as the incident was happening far from villages. The convict threatened to beat the girl up if she dared reveal the incident.

“The girl’s mother is the one who reported the matter to the police after noticing that the girl had difficulties in walking.”

In his ruling, First Grade Magistrate Amurani Phiri said he meted out such a stiff penalty to the suspect to serve as a warning to would-be offenders because defilement cases are becoming rampant in the district.
