Mponela on knife edge, as they fall 2-0 at Blue Eagles: Malawi TNM Super League

Mponela United are on the blink of elimination from the TNM Super League, having failed to earn a result from Nankhaka Ground, where they were clobbered 2-0 by Blue Eagles in a league match played Thursday, December 12, 2013.

Goals from defending midfielder Phillip Masiye and Schumaker Kuwali in either side of halftime ensured maximum points for the Malawi Police Service outfit, which has now moved from seventh to third position on the log with 44 points from 27 games played.

Masiye put the hosts on the winning trail on the half-hour with a 40-metre cracking shot, which caught Mponela goalkeeper off-guard.

As Mponela pressed for an equalizer, Kuwali broke their hearts with the second strike- coming almost at the same time in the second half.

Mponela coach Benjamin Kumwenda admitted that a loss in the next fixture against Kamuzu Barracks on Saturday at Civo Stadium would condemn his side to the lower league.

Mponela risks going down

“Our chances of staying in the Super League have been heavily undermined by this loss and if we lose against KB on Saturday, we are out. But even if we go out on Saturday, we will still fulfill our last fixtures against Big Bullets and Blantyre United in Blantyre and try to leave the stage on a respectable note,” said Kumwenda.

His counterpart Deklerk Msakakuona praised his troops for playing according to instructions, saying his target is to finish in the top five.
