MPs want execution for albino killers: ‘Tit-for-tat justice’

Some Malawian lawmakers at a National Stakeholders Conference held in the Malawi capital, Lilongwe, on Tuesday, have proposed  tit-for-tat justice to end the senseless murderers of person with albinism  by hanging all albino killers, it has been reported .

The conference was convened by civil society organisations to brainstorm strategies aimed at ending the abductions and killings of people with albinism in Malawi.

“He who kills should be killed,” said a lawmaker from the opposition Malawi Congress Party, Madalitso Kazombo.

Kazombo disclosed that a group of concerned legislators would table a proposal in Parliament to strengthen the Penal Code so that albino killers were sentenced to death “instead of merely jailing them”.

“The correct punishment for albino killers is death. We should not even debate about this. Anti-death penalty activists should shut up on this matter,” he said.

Another lawmaker, Richard Chimwendo, told the conference that the ultimate punishment of death should be imposed to albino killers to deter others from the senseless killings.

He also said the crackdown on albino murderers should be taken to three key players in their syndicates: the ruthless thugs, the deceitful magicians, and the superstitious customers.

“It is a pity that, so far, the thugs who kill albinos and the magicians who use albino parts are the ones who are being netted and jailed, while the customers who are the financiers are walking scot free,” he observed.

The debate on the death penalty remains thorny in Malawi, as convicted murderers are never executed. Their sentences are simply commuted to life imprisonment.

I don’t understand here! HOW WILL THE DEATH PENALTY BE STRENGTHENED WHEN IT IS ALREADY THERE? IT IS NOW FOR THE COURTS TO IMPLEMENT IT BY SENTENCING OFFENDERS TO DEATH.

I think that at no time have the laws of Malawi changed when it comes to one taking another person’s life away. Albinos are Malawians and if one takes away an albino’s life that cannot justify creating their own laws. What happens a non-albinos kills another non-albino?

Malawians always opening their mouths in an attempt to gain political popularity. How are you going to justify that the life of an Albino is more important than the life of a non-albino? It’s not long ago when people were being killed for their body parts, and these people were not albino. Where were you then? It is very sad that in Malawi politicians always look for opportunities to enhance their images rather that tackling issues. We already have the death penalty, so how do you strengthen a death penalty? by killing them twice? Such discussions in parliament are a… Read more »
