Locals helped MRA officers at the facility to put out the fire , exploded into view around 9.30am before fire fighters from Chilumba Barracks came to extinguish.

The fire  reportedly started with sudden sparks from a computer server.

The tragedy struck a building which houses Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), Department of Immigration, Malawi Police Services and public agencies.

Sergeant Yusuf Shaibu, Immigration spokesperson at Songwe Border, described the damage as “minimal “, saying  the rescuers  who included public officers, clearing agents, villagers and travellers, saved vital goods on time.

Songwe, which lies side by side with Kasumulu Border Post on Tanzania’s side, is a gateway to East Africa.

Arrivals and departures at Songwe Border came to a standstill following the fire.

Poor Malawians, when are we going to learn a lesson. We still from the government and later say, we have bad governance. Lets not blame the leaders, we are the cause of all this.
Can’t we just try to be responsible, transparent and accountable one day?
A beaural of inquiry should be established here and all those involved be questioned.

Ine I bet Malawi cannot win any war with any of the neighboring states. We can be subdued just in a matter of minutes. Our systems are in total disarray.

Fire fighters from CHILUMBA BARRACKS! A big joke! Chilumba to Songwe is approximately 100km. You mean Karonga town / airport have no fire fighting equipment! Malawi.. Malawi…Malawi! It was even better to call MBEYA Fire Brigade from Tanzania about 25km from the boarder!

    1. cheusi says:

infact, from Chilumba to Karonga its 102 km, and the from karonga to songwe is 45km, so, from chilumba to songwe its approximately 150km, not 100.

Mbeya is far away man, from songwe to mbeya city in tanzania its 225km
