MTL free calls promo boosts sales: 98 000 handsets sold in a month

Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) has profited from its one month free calls promotion, which was initially launched to run from December 21 to January 21.

During the promotion MTL mobile phone subscribers had a rare opportunity to call each other for free during the entire weekends and from 8.00pm to 6.00am during weekdays.

And just within 30 days of the promotion, MTL managed to sell 98 000 handsets and also reconnected about 9 000 inactive subscribers.

Demand for MTL airtime has also reportedly risen despite customers making free calls.

Now, according to MTL Head of Marketing, Chimwemwe Khonje, the situation has forced the phone service operator to extend its free calls promotion with three months (till April end).

The company is aiming at increasing its customer base and is also targeting the Easter Holiday.

MTL mobile phones are currently going at K5000 each in all its retail shops across the country.

During the launch in December last year, Chimwemwe Khonje, said the free calls promotion was a token of appreciate to their loyal customers.
