MTL guard shoot suspect in Lilongwe

Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) Shift Leader guard this week shot a man suspected of stealing MTL cables in Area 15 opposite the Assemblies of God in Lilongwe.

Suspect shot

Lilongwe Police Station Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Kingsley Dandaula said on Tuesday the suspect Evisoni Lakiyoni and his friend only known as Patrick were spotted and confronted by guards as they were trying to steal the cables.

“The two suspects started throwing stones at the guards and in response the guards fired a shot with a Pump gun rifle in the air to scare the suspects.

“It is alleged that the suspects were stubborn and hence they resorted to fire at them and the bullet landed on the victims’ buttocks and fell down,” he said.

The suspect was eventually taken to the Kamuzu Central Hospital for treatment while the second suspect escaped unhurt.

The Police said the suspect is in fair condition but investigations are underway to apprehend the second suspect.

Evisoni Lakiyoni hails from Fote village in the area of Traditional Authority Nsabwe in Thyolo district but is a resident of Chinsapo 1 in Lilongwe.
