MTL increases tariffs for internet, telephone services over Malawi Kwacha depreciation

Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) is to adjust its tariffs following the depreciation of the Malawi kwacha against its major trading currencies, rising inflation rates and increasing cost of borrowing.

According to a statement which was released on Monday, March 18, 2013, the company stated that all prepaid phone services will be adjusted by 20th March 19, 2013 and that all postpaid phone services and MiNET will see the adjustment on 1st April, 2013.

“MTL would like to inform its valued customers and the general public that it will be adjusting its tariffs upwards for consumer Internet Access (MiNET) and Telephony Services,” reads the statement.

“The revision has been necessitated by continued increasing costs of operations such as service provisioning, service delivery and network maintenance incurred in order to give our customers consistent availability and quality of services at all times.

“This has been driven by continued depreciation of the Malawi Kwacha against its major trading currencies, rising inflation rates and increasing cost of borrowing. To enable the company maintain optimum level of operation and provide its customers with excellent services,” stated the release.

In its content, the release stated that the new tariffs for the Prepaid Phone Service for On Net-Local zone on peak, it will be 58t (Tambala) per second, and K35 per minute.

And during off peak hours, the charge will be 33t (Tambala) per second and K20 per minute. On
Net-National zone, the charges will be 93t per second and K56 per minute during peak hours and on off peak, the charges are 47t per second and K28 per minute.

Those on Off Ne zone and during peak hours, the charges will be 117t per second and K70 per minute while during off peak hours it will be at 70t per second and K42 per minute.

The release stated tariffs per SMS which  On Net, it will be K10 and on Off Net it will charge K15 per SMS.

Those on Postpaid Phone Services, and On Net-Local zone and during peak hours, the charges are 57t per second with K34 per minute. And during Off Peak hours, the charges will be 44t per second and K27 per minute. With On Net-National zone, and during Peak hours the customers will experience 70t per second and K42 per minute and during Off Peak hours, the charges will be 57t per minute and K34 per minute.

The release also mentioned Off Net zone which is 82t per second and K49 per minute during peak hours and 57t per second with K34 per minute during off peak.

MTL indicated that on MiNET-Unlimited Phone Services based on voucher will charge K150 per 1 hour, K500 per 5 hours, K1500 per 1 day, K6, 999 per 1 week and K19, 999 per 1 month.

Recently, other mobile operators like Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM), Aitel Malawi have adjusted their tariffs that have included in SMS high rates.
The company indicated that it remains committed to continuously provide its valued customers with the best information communication technology services.
