Mtumodzi fired, Viola takes over as Director of Information
Malawi Government has fired its Director of Information in the Ministry of Information, Tourism and Civic Education, Chikumbutso Mtumodzi and has since appointed former Station Manager for Galaxy Radio, Gerald Viola, as the new director, Nyasa Times understands.
Galaxy Radio belongs to the family of former President Bingu wa Mutharika.
Viola has been joined at the ministry by former Deputy Director at Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Chimwemwe Banda who is the new Principal Secretary replacing Lucky Sikwese.
Until recently, Banda had been posted to the Health Education Unit of the Ministry of Health as a deputy director.
Minister of Information Kondwani Nankhumwa confirmed the appointment and said Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) is making arrangements “on the next postings of the previous occupants of the offices.”
Sikwese and Mtumodzi have been told that they should go home to wait for their fate.
Mtumodzi served as late Mutharika’s spokesperson and was deployed to the Ministry of Information soon after President Joyce Banda took over the reins of power following the death of Bingu wa Mutharika.
