Mukhito was the first casualty of the post Bingu wa Mutharika era when he was removed as IG in April 2012 soon after former president Joyce Banda ascended to the presidency.

He had earlier served as the presidential guard commander.

Mukhito was described by Mutharika as the “finest Inspector General of Police” Malawi has ever had.

He came in the limelight for the academic freedom standoff which involved the then minister of Education and current President Peter Mutharika.
