Mulanje should nurture well their stadium

It’s great news that Mulanje District Council and all its stakeholders refurbished their entertainment park into a mini stadium that is now being sought after by teams in the top flight football league as their preferred home venue.

First to declare their preference were Wizards FC, who hested their opening 2017 TNM Super League match against Silver Strikers at the rehabilitated facility.

I am sure the citizenry of Mulanje must be glowing with pleasure that they don’t have to spend so much money on transportation fares to travel to Blantyre all the time to watch their favourite teams because from now the teams shall find them at their doorstep.

The kids in Mulanje now will have the chance to  high class football because most of them did not have that opportunity to travel to Blantyre for the games like their elders and parents were doing.

Initially Nyasa Big Bullets declared their home venue as Zomba Community Centre for the TNM Super League but they changed their decision that it should be Mulanje Park after realising that Zomba venue is small for certain games especially the upcoming second leg of the Airtel Top 8 whose first leg they lost 0-1 Lilongwe

The Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has now revised the Airtel Top 8 quarterfinal second leg fixture between Big Bullets and Silver Strikers by scheduling the match at Mulanje Park.

According to Fam’s Competitions Manager Gomezgani Zakazaka the local football goberning body have granted that request because at this  quarterfinals level each team is supposed to play their home match at their preferred venues.

This match will be full of fireworks because the Bullets are expected to win by at least two goals to nil to reach he semifinals.

So it is expected that the Bullets faithful shall patronise the match enmasse and so many of them will definitely travel to Mulanje. The Park shall definitely be filled to the brim.

That brings me to mind to ask the Mulanje authorities to now think big over their stadium. All the revenue collected should be well managed in order to maintain the facility into even better condition.

They should be thinking on how they can continue to increase the number of seats to accommodate more and more people because high profile matches shall continue finding their way to Mulanje Park because of Bullets and Wizards.

The problem with our football system is that once we have something good, we neglect to maintain it or even upgrade it. Examples are aplenty — MDC Stadium, Escom Ground, BAT Ground, Kalulu, Zomba and Lilongwe Community Centre, Kamuzu Institute of Sports, Mzuzu Stadium and Civo Stadium.

Fortunately MDC Stadium was restored to sanity by Surestream but we don’t see any progress that it shall be upgraded into something more attractive than before.

So I plead with the Mulanje District Council and its stakeholders to think of upgrading their Park that has added more value as it adds to the great Mulanje Mountain as a tourist attraction.

Always view each weekend as a money spinner for the locals their because of the local tourists coming enmasse to watch the high profile games.

Otherwise, congratulations for the excellent initiative to upgrade the Park that it can attract the attention of the giant team, Nyasa Big Bullets. Enjoy the matches.
