Malawi’s netball is likely to move to another level with the launch of a lucrative K12 million netball sponsorship package by MultiChoice Malawi through its newly launched product GOtv.

Unveiling the sponsorship package at MultiChoice premises in Lilongwe’s Area 9 Friday (April 12, 2012) evening, MultiChoice’s sales and marketing manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda said the package includes an K8 million sponsorship for GOtv Netball Champions League and a K4 million sponsorship for the country’s national netball team, the Queens.

He said the GOtv Netball Champions League will involve top five netball teams from the country- namely Escom Sisters, Bingu Tigresses, MTL Queens, Blue Eagles Sisters and Civonets, who will sort each other out on round robin format with the team scoring the highest number of points after home and away ties emerging champions.

A cool K1 million and a locally made trophy will be presented to the winning team with runners-up pocketing half the amount and the third, fourth and fifth teams sharing K400,000, K300,000 and K200,000 respectively.

Apart from the prize money, Nyirenda said each of the five teams will be presented with K500,000 for competition expenses and a branded uniforms with names printed at the back.

The local netball governing body, Nam has also not been left out as it will get K500,000 for
administration with K1.5 Million going towards branding of the netball courts and K350,000 for umpires, balls and stop watches.

With the motto: Go Konko, the tournament is expected to throw-off on May 4, 2013 at Blantyre Youth Centre and fans will be able to watch a minimum of six games in every weekend of the tournament on GOtv, which, as of now is only accessible in Blantyre and Lilongwe.

Queens package

Talking about the Queens sponsorship, the MultiChoice Sales and Marketing Manager said K1 Million will go towards the team’s preparations for the African netball championship and a tournament in Australia with K3 Million earmarked for materials like shoes, bags and uniforms.

Nam’s outgoing general secretary Helene Mpinganjira said the sponsorship had come at the right time, when Malawi will be hosting the African netball championship from June 24th to 29th, 2013.

She assured the sponsors that with such a big boost, the Queens will be able to break into the top three positions on world netball rankings.

Youth and Sports Minister Enock Chihana, who presided over the launch hailed MultiChoice for coming up with the initiative: “On behalf of Malawi government, I wish to thank MultiChoice for this kind gesture, which you have made on your own without being approached. As government, we are going to ensure that the programme meets its objectives,” said Chihana.

The launching activities spread to Civo Stadium tomorrow (April 13) where there will be a netball match between Blantyre and Lilongwe select and a football match involving Silver Strikers and Big Bullets, amongst other activities.
