Murder of Italian, Malawi Police arrest 4 suspects

Police in Kasungu, Malawi’s central region district, have arrested four people in connection to the murder of an 85-year-old Italian national identified as Ugo Guilian.

Kasungu Police Spokesperson, Edwin Kaunda, confirmed the development to Nyasa Times and identified the four as Alfred Goodson, 28, Tonex Chalowa, 24, Kanunkhira Banda, 51 and 27-year-old Tido Joseph.

Kaunda said on 8th January, the four suspects broke into the house of Guilian at his Chiposa Estate in the district where they robbed him of K60, 000.

”The four suspects later assaulted Guilian to death,” said Kaunda.

According to Kaunda, the deceased wife who saw the four suspects assault her husband reported the matter to Kasungu Police Station.

”Police officers from the CID led by Assistant Superintendent Rodwell mounted a manhunt which led to the arrest of the four,” said the police spokesperson.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Kasungu Magistrate Court once investigations are over where their case would be committed to the High Court for trial.

Goodson comes from Kabwazi village, T/A Njolomole in Ntcheu while the other three- Chalowa (Chalowa Village), Banda (Enesi Village) and Joseph (Vudzu village) all from Traditional Authority Lukwa in Kasungu district.
