Muslims threaten to march against Malawi minister Uladi

A group calling itself “Concerned Muslims” in the predominantly Islamic eastern region lakeshore district of Mango chi has threatened to go into the streets to protest against Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister and Peoples Party senior official Uladi Mussa accusing him of putting their religion into disrepute through his foul-mouthing speeches in various ruling PP rallies.

This was disclosed at a news conference the group in Mangochi on Wednesday.

According to the group Chairman Ishmael Yusuf, Mangochi Muslims feel offended for Mussa, a Mosque going Moslem himself,  to use and narrate Muslim songs at political rallies and castigating other people particularly from eastern region for supporting opposition United Democratic Front
(UDF).

Mussa recently told a PP political rally in Mangochi that: “UDF is not Islam and Islam is not UDF.”

“Islam teaches about five tenets which include, fasting, going to Haji and praying five times a day. Does UDF teach people about that?” queried Mussa, who is also a devout Moslem and a former madrasa teacher.

He added: “Malawi is a mixture state comprising Muslims and Christians with Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (Peace be unto you and so may the mercy of Allah and His blessings)and Allelluya. Without accepting the existence of the two, you better stay outside the country.”

But the ‘Concerned Muslims’ said the Minister should stop bringing Islam into political equation.

“We want to warn Honourable Uladi Mussa to immediately stop this tendency” said Yusuf.

Yusuf therefore warned that if Mussa continues to castigate fellow Muslims they will have no choice but to go into the streets and demonstrate.

“If he continues, we will definitely go into the streets and hold demonstration,” he said.

According to Yusuf, Muslims who support UDF or any other political party have do so as there is freedom of association.

The ‘Concerned Muslims’ also disputed Mussa claims that he is a Grand Mufti .
