Mutharika calls 2014 ‘successful’ year for Malawi: Fetes religious leaders
Malawian President Peter Mutharika has described the past year 2014 as a success towards improving the country’s economic stand.
Mutharika made the remarks on New Year’s Day at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre when he hosted a cross section of different religious leaders from southern region to a state banquet in order to celebrate and give thanks to God for His blessings upon the nation and seek more for the New Year.
The President hailed religious leaders for demonstrating total commitment in ensuring that the country move forward in all spheres of development.
“I take this time to appreciate the support and prayers I have received from you all in 2014. When I called for prayers for rains, you received my requests and organized special prayers in your denominations.
“It is therefore encouraging that some parts of the country have been receiving rains. As such we should continue to do so that the whole country should receive good rains and have bumper harvest,” said President Mutharika.
“It is only by doing this that can make Malawi a better place to live with everyone sharing a common vision.” He added.
The Malawi leader further explained that it was through prayers that Malawi managed to breakthrough some of the challenges that rocked the country’s economic sector.
“Though, in the just ended year, we lost lives of many people, houses washed away due to natural calamities, but I must assure you that economically the country is doing well as evidenced by stabilizing of the Malawi Kwacha, control inflation rate among others,” he said.
He then pleaded with all Malawians to exercise patience in ensuring that the country reaches its full potential of transformation.
“These things take time and there is need for patience. Above all, there is need for concerted effort among Government, Civil Society Organizations, Non Governmental Organisations and Religious Institutions to achieve a common goal,” appealed the President.
Commenting on the matter, CCAP Blantyre Synod General Secretary Rev Alex Maulana and Montfort Sitima from Mangochi Diocese hailed the State President for organising the event expressing optimism that God will see the nation through from all challenges it is facing.
While Muslim Association of Malawi President Sheik Chabulika described the event as a greater milestone in as far as enhancing unity among interdenominational leaders was concerned.
The luncheon, the first of its kind since President Mutharika ascended in to the office of presidency was spiced up by prayers meditated in different areas of rains and bumper harvest, economic revival, love and hardworking amongst the citizens among others.-Mana
