Mutharika daughters jet in Malawi ahead of elections
Two children of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Presidential candidate Peter Mutharika have finally landed in Malawi for the first time since their father returned home almost a decade ago.
The two daughters- Moyenda and Monica- arrived in Malawi on Thursday through Kamuzu International Airport in the capital, Lilongwe.
A member of the Mutharika’s family told Nyasa Times, the two daughters are in their father’s birth land on holiday.
“They have come to visit their father as well as other relations. They are on holiday for some two weeks or so and thereafter they will be travelling back to US,” said the family member.
Mutharika- who was married for 30 years before his Caribean wife succumbed to cancer- has three grown up children, the two daughters and a man who are all working in US. One of them, Moyenda, is a practicing attorney.
The children are coming to Malawi at the time their father is amongst the four presidential candidates who are likely to form the next government after May 20.
Mutharika’s married life has remained a controversial issue with Malawians questioning whether the DPP torch bearer indeed has children or not after they failed to attend some of the most notable events such as the death of their uncle Bingu and his wedding to Callista.
He recently made the tactical error of denying to the online newspaper Malawi Voice that he was gay. That succeeded only in increasing speculation.
