Mutharika resilient to challenge JB for Malawi presidency

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Peter Mutharika has said he is steadfast to unseat People’s Party (PP) and President Joyce Banda through the vote in the May 20 Tripartite Elections, saying he would want to brings seriousness and discipline in the running of government affairs.

Mutharika was addressing thousands of supporters on Friday in Luchenza, where he was introducing his running mate Saulos Chilima to DPP supporters in the tea-growing district of Thyolo.

The DPP torch bearer said he picked Chilima as his running mate owing to his private sector experience as it is his desire that government should be run effectively like business.

“We can change this by bringing in seriousness and disciple in government,” said Mutharika.

He accused the Joyce Banda government of failing to run the affairs but busy with a project to distribute chickens, goats and motor bikes as a strategy to develop the country.

Mutharika said Malawians have every reason to put DPP in government as (PP) has messed up.

“Imagine the PP government plans to open the University of Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) without tap water but boreholes. What sort of government is this? We need serious people in leadership,” he said.

Mutharika said the current leadership is just famous on the many ‘gates’ scandals it has burdened Malawians.

“Other than cashgate which they did seriously and with all their strength, what else have they done with seriousness. Look how many scandal gates we have now? Cashgate, jetgate, oilgate, boatgate, Escomgate, maizegate, shoegate and many other gates. Unfortunately all these are open as depicted on their party logo.

“We in DPP are more than determined to start serious business from day one in government,” he said.

He said he now has acquired a ‘red card’ to flash in President Banda as eviction orders from State House on May 20.

“I have a red card that I will use to remove Joyce Banda from government,” said Mutharika as supporters chanted “ Sesa Joyce! Sesa!”

In his remarks Chilima said the country needs visionary and serious leaders who can fix the economy.

He said the Mutharika-Chilima pairing will provide new type of progressive politics for Malawi.
