Mutharika says opposition led inquiry on Bingu wealth is campaign tool: ‘Joyce Banda, Kasambara failed’

President Peter Mutharika has angrily reacted to the opposition led parliamentary inquiry on former president Bingu wa Mutharika’s wealth, describing it as mere campaign tool by his political rivals.

Mutharika: Go ahead and probe, you will be ashamed to find nothing

Speaking on Thursday in Blantyre when the Malawi Human Rights Commission presented a state of human rights report, the angry and emotional Mutharika said the Joyce Banda government investigated the issue for two years but failed.

“Ralph Kasambara was all over the world to probe Bingu but failed,” said Mutharika referring to the former Justice minister in the Peoples Party led government.

Bingu is alleged to have stashed K61 billion in offshore accounts during his eight year reign.

He is accused of getting 10 per cent from all government contracts offered to Mota Engil, an international contractor, accusations denied by the government.

“They just want to use this as their campaign tool during the elections, it is not true that Bingu had all that money,” said Mutharika.

Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee is set to release the inquiry results this month end.

The opposition-led inquiry on Bingu’s treasure-trove,is not a campaign tool, even Peter himself acknowledges this fact.He knows pretty well that his fellow gang-star (Bingu) had a hand on government funds that was used in building the small ndata among other things.Peter knows pretty well that his brother stole US$1.5million from his employer COMESA head-quartered in Harare,Zimbabwe.Malawians,to some extent, you must blame yourself for your stupidity in embracing thieves and thugs you had never heard of them before. In fact, you could have learnt a vivid lesson from your so-called WAMUYAYA,yes your fellow human being turned into immortal? Since when? And yet still you have… Read more »

Claiming what belongs to the public isn’t politics. Elections aside. This is about recovering stolen money. It is a search for justice and truth. Don’t intimidate us, Mr. President. Some good experts from outside will help us find where your late brother stashed our treasure from Kayelekera. With prayers, time, effort and patience we will get it. Nigerians got what Abacha had stolen and hidden in Europe. It took them decades but they finally recovered it. We too will
