Mutharika tells north: ’Malawi has no leadership’

President of opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Peter  Mutharika has said Malawi has no leadership.

Speaking during the whistle-stop campaign tour on Tuesday from Mzuzu to Kalonga, Mutharika said the recent financial maladministration at the Capital Hill, also known as the ‘Cash-gate’ scandal which led to the dissolution of the cabinet is a result of the leadership vacuum.

He said the problem with President Joyce Banda is that instead of spending energy working on files in her office she is busy attending to issues which can be handled by other government officials.

“The problem is that we have a President who likes travelling than being in the office, just imagine, the President went outside the country when we had hard hitting problems and instead of going straight to the office when she came back, she is always on the roads as if everything is okay.

“Why could the whole President be distributing cows when there are pertinent issues which need her immediate action? Some of these things could be better left for ministers and District Commissioners,” said Mutharika.

Mutharika assured the people that once elected into power during the 2014 Tripartite elections, he will always be in the office attending to government issues for the betterment of the people.

The DPP torch bearer also emphasized the point that he still regards the Lake Malawi wrangle is non-negotiable.

“No matter what happens this lake is our, it has been as such for so many years and there is nobody who can just wake up and claim what belongs to us.

“As soon as I enter the office next year, I will purchase modern high-tech ships which will be used for fishing on this lake, its high time for those living along the lake shore start benefiting from the lake,” he said.

Among other things, he promised that the DPP led government will construct Nyika-Livingstonia road Rumphi Teachers Training College, Karonga rice institute and cotton processing ginneries.

There was money during DPP but now they are sharing the money at Capital Hill while people are doing nothing. People are living in torn clothes with the government doing nothing.

Taking his turn, DPP MP for Karonga South Constituency Glad Chembe Muntharika said the problems facing the country today is that the government officials are busy enriching themselves than the people they serve.

“The government is full of greedy people who have nothing at heart for the people but only minding their own pockets. They  are still blaming the late president, let Bingu wa Mutharika to rest in peace and blame nobody for failing to run the country,” he said.

Chembe Munthari said when Banda was taking over the leadership, she found people who had enough food but only to find themselves hungry a year later.
