Mutharika’s beer party is a ‘criminal act' — PDM

By NyasaTimes Reporter

The People’s Development Movement (PDM) has described as criminal President Bingu wa Mutharika’s vendors’ binge party held at the Mzuzu Stadium on Wednesday saying it smacks of people who celebrate deaths, as out of touch with Malawi culture.

“It’s criminal to hold a party just a few days after the Police, of which he is Commander- in- Chief killed unarmed civilians. Were they celebrating their deaths?” the PDM Secretary General Harry Chikoma Mkandawire told Nyasa Times.

Mkandawire, who was at one time Mutharika’s blue-eyed boy in the ruling DPP, was reacting to Mutharika’s remarks at a vendor’s binge party held at the Mzuzu Stadium on Wednesday.

Mkandawire; Bingu's criminal act

At the party of drunkards, Mutharika told the 1,900 stoned vendors that the demonstrations in Mzuzu were organised by criminals Harry Mkandawire and Yeremiah Chihana, saying these are responsible for what happened.

But Mkandawire also said the purchase of the costly presidential jet by President Mutharika when many Malawians are leaving from hand to mouth is criminal act.

“And the building of a grand mansion at Ndata that we are told is costing billions of Kwachas is also another criminal act because surely Mutharika’s earning since 2004 do not tally with the construction of mansion of that nature. It’s simple logic. So who is a criminal here?” Mkandawire said.

But in trying to protect his wife’s ministerial job , DPP Youth Cadets commander Gotani  wa Gotani Mkandawire, lashed at his elder brother Harry Mkandawire, and Yelemiah Chihana  calling them criminals and spewing out a litany of expletives.

It has come as shock to many people in Mzuzu and the northern region that Gotani Mkandawire who seem to have a high respect and a good relationship with his elder brother, Harry has had the ‘balls’ to despise his brother in public.

“Gotani is trying to show Mutharika that he is still supporting him because his wife’s job has been on the chopping board,” Mkandawire  said, playing down his young brother’s loathing in an interview with Nyasa Times.

Chihana has since engaged lawyers and is suing for defamation.
