Mvula faults FA Malawi on Gunda’s appointment: Asks for reforms

Footblall commentator  and former Mighty Be Forward Wanderers Club Chairman Humphreys Mvula has faulted the whole process Football Association of Malawi (FAM) used to appoint its new General Secretary Alfred Gunda.

Mvula: FAM should have democrcay and be transparent

Fam President Walter Nyamilandu Manda and his Executive Committee endorsed Alfred Gunda as the new General Secretary at a meeting held in Mzuzu recently.

He replaces Suzgo Nyirenda who is heading to the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) where he has secured a job as Deputy Chief Executive Officer-(Administration and Competition).

Speaking inside Ufulu FM Radio’s ‘Thumba la Zigoli‘ programme on Monday evening monitored by Nyasa Times, Mvula said the association could have sought the views of Malawians first before approving the name of Mr. Gunda.

Mvula went on to push FAM to face reforms to improve democracy and  accountability at the association.

“We need greater transparency policies in decision making process at FAM and I wonder whether if democracy exists at FAM,” wondered Mvula.

The former Wanderers Chairman suggested that FAM could have advertised the post, shortlist eligible candidates who could have applied and then undego interviews.

According to Mvula, Gunda has nothing to offer in as far as Malawi  football is concerned.

“I dont know him but I hear he is the one who was  Secretary  for Nothern Region Football League which was in total mess the past few seasons. So if he failed to run Northern Region Football League  do you expect such a person to perform at national level,” Mvula querried.

In a statement released by FAM last week, the association President Nyamilandu Manda in line with Article 39(3) of FAM statutes appointed Gunda as the replacement for the departed Nyirenda before the whole executive committee members approved his name.

Gunda served as NRFL General Secretary before joining FAM as an executive member a positio he has served for less than one year.

He previously served as a Sports Administator at Mzuzu University where he has been working until his appointment as FAM G.S where he rose in the rank of the position of Senior Assistant Registrar (Academic).

Gunda  holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree (Education), a Master of Science Degree in Sports Management and a Certificate in Sports Business Management.

The out going General Secretary Nyirenda served at FAM for 10 years with five years as General Secretary.

This appointment is illegal and the new GS is not going to last. There is something Walter is trying to conceal by appointing this novice. The last time Suzgo had threatened Walter that unless his contract was renewed, he was to reveal the clandestine deals at Mpira House. That is why Walter cannot touch Mdolo because he has more to loose. Let the post be advertised and it be handled by competent recruitment agencies if FA is to be trusted. My free advise to Gunda; don’t resign from MZUNI as you might be left in the cold. According to Chibowa,… Read more »
