Mwambene, Nkutu in tight golden boot race: Malawi Super League

Red Lions F.C Striker Kumbukani Mwambene who is the current leading scorer in the Malawi’s top light TNM Super League has vowed to fight and win the Golden Boot Award for the 2013-2014 season.

Mwambene who last weekend banged in four goals when his side thrashed defending champions Silver Strikers 5-2 at the Zomba Community said his secret has been shooting at goal and having a target.

“The secret is that I pick the target with an aim to shoot at the goal,” Mwambene told Nyasa Times in an interview.

Mwambene has so far scored nine goals one ahead of his closest contender Deus Nkutu of Mzuzu based soldiers outfit Moyale Barracks.

In a telephone interview with Nyasa Times on Thursday from his base in Mzuzu, Nkutu who has been Moyale’s scoring machine for the past two seasons admitted the competition is stiff but anything can happen.

“It is possible for me to win the golden boot having missed it last season but I that gave me a lesson and I gained a lot of experience,” Nkutu said.

He further revealed that his secret has always been following the instructions issued by his coaches.

“My secret is to always have in mind what coaches teach me at the training ground.”

Meanwhile, according to statistics, It has proved to be an all soldiers affair in the golden boot chase as the third position of the scorers chart is also held by players from army teams.

Gastin Simkonda (Moyale Barracks), Kelvin Hanganda (Kamuzu Barracks) and Calisto Kalinda of Moyale Barracks are on third with seven goals each.

Leonard Mgomezulu from rookies Airborne Ranges and Jafali Chande of Epac F.C have six goals apiece.
