Mwapasa granted bail: Arrested together with Malawi coup plotters
Former presidential guard commander, Duncan Mwapasa, who was arrest with other 10 on alleged coup plot has been released on bail by the Police.
Ministry of Justice spokeswoman, Apoche Itimu, confirmed that Mwapasa has been released.
Mwapasa is accused of stealing government property soon after Mutharika’s death.
Mutharika died from a heart attack and there were efforts by government officials to prevent then vice president Joyce Banda assuming power.
Ealier on Wednesday, the Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrates Court charged the 11 suspects with treason.
All suspects were in court except Dr. Jean Kalirani and Goodall Gondwe who are in hospital.
Peter Mutharika, Bright Msaka and Goodall Gondwe had an additional charge of inciting mutiny.
Ntata has also been charged with disobidience of statutory duty
Kalirani, Msaka and Mutharika have also been charged with giving false evidence. Allan Ntata, former legal affairs advisor to late former president Bingu wa Mutharika named in the saga, also charged with treason.
