Mwawi Kumwenda in Australia team of the week
Malawi’s netball export Mwawi Kumwenda continues to shine on the international scene after she was selected in the Suncorp Super Netball Team of week following her outstanding performance over the weekend against Magpies.
Kumwenda’s team Melbourne Vixens pruned Magpies 60-56 in a tightly-contested round seven match at Hisense Arena on Sunday.
The Malawi Queens evergreen shooter held her own against the Diamonds defensive duo of Sharni Layton and April Brandley on her way to a 33-goal haul from 35 attempts.
Shooting partner Tegan Philip made plenty of long range shots in her 27 goals.
The win leaves the Vixens (5-1-1) level with the Sunshine Coast Lightning on 11 points at the halfway mark in the season, one point behind the undefeated, Sydney-based Giants.
According to supernetball.com, Kumwenda is among the seven netballers in Australia, who have made it into team of the week due to her outstanding performance.
“Plenty of great GS performances this weekend but Mwawi Kumwenda stood up under the pressure of a classy opponent in Sharni Layton. She only missed two goals for the game scoring 33 goals from 35 attempts,” reads the report on the website.
Other players from Vixens, who have made it into team of the week alongside Mwawi are goal attacker Tegan Philip and Winger Attacker Liz Watson.
In a telephone interview from Australia with Nyasa Times on Monday, Kumwenda praised God and hailed her teammates for everything.
“I am so excited and l owe everything to God and my teammates. I do this for my country because my aim is to raise our flag high,” she said.
Bravo Mwayi. Keep it up.
Mwawi go go and raise our malawi high….
