Mwai has so far garnered  540 more votes  than the second placed candidate with 3035 votes while the Russian dance couple, Dmitry Zharkov and Olga Kulikova, were on second position with 2488 votes.

They are followed by the Flying Disc Beach Ultimate Mixed team from Germany on third slot with 1570.

However, the Association says the results are preliminary and that voting continue up to January 31.

“However, nothing has been decided yet. Friends and fans of a particular sport, athlete or team can still cast their vote on a daily basis. Those who know how to mobilise their supporters can still come out on top. Voting closes on January 31st.

“The title race is still open. When it comes to choosing the IWGA Athlete/Team of the Year, the decisive vote has not yet been cast. Until January 31st, supporters can still help their favourite athlete(s) win by voting on our website: www.theworldgames.org,” reads statement posted in the IWGA website.

Anyone is allowed to vote once a day and Malawians  are urged to vote for the 26-year-old netball super star on the IWGA link www.theworldgames.org

The winner will be announced on February 1 2016 .

The 2015 Netball World Cup Player of the tournament was nominated among 18 candidates to compete for IWGA athlete of the year of 2015 award after  her vintage performance at the World Cup

Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) board chairperson James Chuma is appealing to  Malawians to keep on voting for Mwawi, saying the nomination itself is “a recognition of excellence.”

Leader of opposition and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera who is a former chairman of Malawi National Council of Sports  also called on Malawians to vote for the netball star.
