Mwenifumbo rejects DPP link:  Karonga MP decries Malawi’s ‘disappearing’ democracy

Karonga Central independent legislator Frank  Tumpale Mwenifumbo has vehemently denied rumours that he is joining the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

He  has rebuffed the claims by insisting he has no thoughts of  joing the graivy train of the DPP.

Mwenifumbo told Nyasa Times on Thursday that there was “no reason” for him to join DPP, saying his political ambition now is to serve the people.

The wealthy politician-cum -businessman said it was sad that people were putting words in his mouth that he was joing DPP, insinuating most defectors who have joined the party are financial parasites and fortune seekers.

“I have no reason at all to join DPP,” said Mwenifumbo. “At present my concern is to serve my constituents,  nothing else.  No,  I am not joining DPP,” he added.

The parliamentarian said people should not think he is pro-DPP when he supports “some” of government’s ideologies.

“My interest is to see this country move forward. So,  if there is something they [government] are saying that will benefit the nation I support,” he said.

Last week Mwenifumbo attacked an opposition MP — Vitus Dzoole Mwale — who blamed government for deforestation in the country.

But Mwenifumbo, who said is passionate about the environment, rebuked Mwale saying if “we’re to reforest the country, the issue of deforestation should have a national blame.”

According to Mwenifumbo,  it is sad that people are not using their minds and brains in this era.

“Because of that being open minded is becoming a problem in the country. Our democracy is disappearing,” said Mwenifumbo.

Last weekend a number  of politicians defected to the ruling DPP including members of Parliament (MPs) David Bisnowaty (Lilongwe City Centre Constituency), Patrick Makina (Zomba Ntonya) and Davis Katsonga (Mwanza Central),

Others were from  People’s Party (PP) including former spokesman Kenneth Msonda, former director of women’s affairs Mary Makungwa, ex-provincial chairperson (North) Sabon Mchizi and members Bintony Kutsaila and professors Etta Banda and Isaac Lamba.
