Mzuni’s registrar Gunda under fire over Simama League scandal

Mzuzu University (Mzuni) students  wants the removal of their Assistant Registrar (Academic and Student Affairs) Alfred Gunda from his office, arguing he does not put the welfare of the students at heart and that he is responsible for the failure of their team – Mzuni FC – to be crowned Northern Region Simama Football League champions, Nyasa Times has established.

The students believe that Gunda, who is a renowned sports administrator and general secretary of the Mzuzu and District Football League Committee, is siding with Karonga United instead of supporting their team.

The mishap which is currently headlining sports news in the local media is as a result of a controversial three points which was given to Karonga United instead of Mzuni FC.

“We’re supposed to be crowned champions. We played or our games and have 94 points now, ahead of all other teams,” said a student who opted for anonymity.

The student claimed that they were shocked that Gunda was taking their issue with a grain of salt yet he serves in the students’ welfare office.

And in a letter to the student community, signed by Alinafe Dzanja and Edward Chuza, Mzuni Student Union (MUSU) Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively, the two say that have furnished the University Registrar Vyson Jedegwa with minutes of the General Assembly of April 2, 2012.

“The resolution of the August House that Mr. A Gunda be removed from this position of the Assistant Registrar (Academic and Student Affairs) was included in the minutes, with an ultimatum that his removal from this office should be done by Tuesday, April 8, 2014, and that if the date is prolonged the Honourable Members agreed to take any other step to help themselves out of his services,” reads part of the communiqué which Nyasa Times has seen.

The communiqué further calls on students not to take any action before the University Registrar responds.

“The Office of the Speaker then advises the Honourable Members, the concerned intelligentsias and academicians, not to take any action before the stated deadline,” it adds.

But according to Nyasa Times investigations, Gunda is a victim of no-wrong doing.

“I don’t think it would have made sense if he [Gunda] could side with Mzuni FC simply because he is a registrar. The man will suffer because of trying to remain as professional as possible,” said another student.

In February this year, Gunda had denied crowning Karonga United as champions in the Simama League in an interview with state broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

He had said that the committee had not yet decided on the champions.

“Those are just speculations and the committee has neither said nor communicated to any media about the matter,” he had said.
