Mzuzu City Council officials to meet Chihana family over ‘Heroes Acre’

Officials from Mzuzu City Council say they want to meet the family of freedom fighter, late Chakufwa Chihana so that his body should be exhumed and be reburied at a Heroes Acre.

Mzuzu City Council chief executive officer Mcloud  Kadammanja could however say when the meeting will take place.

“The graveyard is poorly located, surely the grave site is at a wrong place according to council plans. Fortunately, we have already established a new Heroes Acre where all heroes will be buried,” he said.

The Chihana family is refusing to exhume the body for reburial at another place, saying Chihana loved the current place where he is resting and called it Kawiruwiru.

The grave yard is just metres away from the Reserve Bank of Malawi offices. This is a place he held his first political rally after he was freed from prison on the landmark sedition case.

However it has transpired that the council has sold the land including the grave yard to a business man.
