Organic coffee production does not require use of chemical fertilizers or any chemicals at the plantation, hence cheap to produce, according to the cooperative union’s Marketing and Sales Officer, Kingston Mhango.

Speaking to Malawi News Agency (MANA) Tuesday, Mhango said Mzuzu Coffee is now set to start producing organic coffee.

“We are introducing this new type of coffee on the market because this type of coffee is on high demand but in short supply in the SADC region.

“This type is not very expensive to produce as it does not require application of chemical fertilizers,” he said.

Mhango also asked small holder farmers to consider organic coffee production, saying such coffee does not need to be certified as they (Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union) already have the expected requirements in producing it.

Commenting on the development, MCCCI President, Karl Chokotho, commended the initiative that Mzuzu Coffee has planned to undertake, saying that is what his institution (MCCCI) as well as government expect from companies that export products.

“Malawian companies should take an example from what Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union Limited is doing, since we all know that exporting our products helps to bring foreign currency in our country,” he said.

Chokotho also urged companies in the country to strive to produce products of high quality that befit exportation.

Apart from venturing into organic coffee production, Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union also plans to expand coffee exportation to other countries which were not buying Mzuzu Coffee in the SADC region.

Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union Limited is a union of about 3000 coffee farmers who have been growing the plantation crop since early 1930s.
