The 14 handicap golfer from the northern city stood out in a field of 75 golfers from various golf clubs in the country including the host club with an impressive score of 36 stale ford points.

He received a trophy and a TV screen from sponsors Nico General Insurance, who have been sponsoring golf at the club for close to five years.

“I thank Nico General for the lovely tournament. The fun part of golf is that some play to win and others play for fun. As for me, I was just relaxed because I regard this as my home course. I normally come here to train and play golf,” said Nain after receiving his trophy.

Blantyre based lawyer John Gift Mwakhwawa drove back to the commercial city with a home theatre after finishing second with 35 points. He was closely trailed by Vincent Madikhula from the host club who counted out Thomas Malopa of Mzuzu on 34 points.

Madikhula walked away with a braii stand with Malopa receiving a mini home theatre from the insurance giants.

Veteran golfer James Chimwaza was presented with the prize for the best senior golfer, a prize which is given to the best performer amongst golfers aged over 55.

Ruth Mvula from Kasasa (40 points) was presented with a trophy and fridge as ladies’ champion with her runner-up Lilian Kawaza from Blantyre (34 points) getting an air cooler.

The longest drive for men went to Patridge Shycal from Lilongwe with that of women going to Mvula. Madikhula had the nearest-the-pin for men on hole number 16.

Rick Trewin from Kasasa played the most golf.

Speaking in an interview after the prize presentation, Nico General Chief Executive Offer Eric Chapola expressed satisfaction with the response from golfers.

“We had over 130 golfers wanting to play but we had to unsubscribe other golfers because the course could not accommodate such a big number of players. We are very sorry to those that did not appear on the final list,” said Chapola.

The Nico General CEO hailed Illovo Sugar Group for the support the company was rendering to his company: “Illovo is our biggest client and we wanted to express our appreciation to the company and interact with their staff and other partners.”

In covering the damage done to the Kasasa greens, the Nico General boss presented a K200,000 cheque to the club’s captain Robert Ngala for course maintenance.
