Mzuzu minibus driver arrested or causing death by careless driving

Malawi Police in Mzuzu are keeping in custody a 29-year-old Ken Nkhoma for allegedly causing death by reckless driving.

According to Mzuzu Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Cecillia Mfune, the suspect (Nkhoma) on Sunday, was driving a Toyota Hiace mini bus registration number MZ 3393 heading towards Luwinga from the city along MI Road.

The PRO said upon reaching a junction which is a turn-off to Chibavi, near Lunyangwa Bridge, Nkhoma hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road from the right hand side going to the left.

“The victim, whose full particulars are not yet known, but is believed to be in his 40s, was taken to Mzuzu Central Hospital where he died hours later due to head injuries.

“The suspect will appear in court soon to answer the charge of causing death by reckless driving, contrary to Section 126 of the Road Traffic Act,” she said.

Meanwhile, police have advised drivers to observe traffic rules which require that maximum speed in cities shall be 50 Km per hour.

Ken Nkhoma hails from Zayo Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
