Mzuzu police arrests another hospital worker over medical drug theft

Malawi Police in Mzuzu have arrested a hospital worker at Mzuzu Central Hospital and are upbeat they will catch a “big fish” on theft of drugs at the referral hospital following the arrest of a laboratory assistant who was found with cartons of medical drugs and diagnostic equipment which he was sending to Lilongwe.

Peter Kalaya, Mzuzu Police Public Relations Officer said the law enforcers were tipped that the lab assistant Kondwani Kanthenga had delivered 10 cartons of medical drugs and diagnostic equipment from the hospital through Axa Bus designated for Lilongwe.

“We rushed to the bus depot and managed to confisticate the medical drugs and the equipment. At 11 in the evening we to the house of the suspect and arrested him,” he said.

He said some well wishers were surprised that Kanthenga had been sending the medical drugs and equipment with full government labels.

“Our investigations are leading to a “big fish” and we will make a breakthrough and stop this once and for all,” he said.

Kanthenga comes from Nkhata Bay.

The arrest comes barely three weeks after the arrest of a district health officer for Chiradzulu Dr Gift Chinomba in connection with the theft of K10 million drugs at the hospital.

A pharmacy technician and driver were earlier netted in connection with the Chiradzulu government medical drug theft.
