Malawi lawmakers boycott President’s opening of parliament
Most members of parliament have boycotted the opening of Malawi’s parliament by President Bingu Mutharika today.
Mutharika in his state of the opening of parliament, addressed less than a qurom of 91 lawmakers, as opposition benches were empty.
Only Malawi Congress Party (MCP) chief whip Bester Majoni and independent MP Gerald Mponda were conspicuously seen in the opposition benches including former vice president Justin Malewezi.
Vice President Dr Cassim Chilumpha who had earlier received invitation to attend the opening was barred by security forces to come to the Chamber.
In his state of opening address, visible demoralised Mutharika called on unity with opposition.
The President addressed a shortest state of the opening ever, which lasted for not more than 15 minutes.
Opposition is demanding the implementation of Section 65, which forbids lawmakers from switching parties.
Government however is against the implementation of the constitutional provision as it risks losing over 70 MPs who were poached from the opposition.
Mutharika was a pioneer defector from UDF to form his DPP.
