Malawi lawmakers boycott President’s opening of parliament

Most members of parliament have boycotted the opening of Malawi’s parliament by President Bingu Mutharika today.

Mutharika in his state of the opening of parliament, addressed less than a qurom of 91 lawmakers, as opposition benches were empty.

Only Malawi Congress Party (MCP) chief whip Bester Majoni and independent MP Gerald Mponda were conspicuously seen in the opposition benches including former vice president Justin Malewezi.

Vice President Dr Cassim Chilumpha who had earlier received invitation to attend the opening was barred by security forces to come to the Chamber.

In his state of opening address, visible demoralised Mutharika called on unity with opposition.

The President addressed a shortest state of the opening ever, which lasted for not more than 15 minutes.

Opposition is demanding the implementation of Section 65, which forbids lawmakers from switching parties.

Government however is against the implementation of the constitutional provision as it risks losing over 70 MPs who were poached from the opposition.

Mutharika was a pioneer defector from UDF to form his DPP.

It is so shameful to see the opposition not in attendance at the oppening of this pariament. First they said "Bingu did not want them to" Now the president has given them the chance to hear what his views are, they respond by not showing up? Shame on you MCP shame on you UDF. Mukungofuna kuti chitukuko chilowe pansi kuti muzidzatinamiza mukamadzatipempha ma voti saying this government has failed. No you have failed! * will never vote for MCP or UDF, Ndinu atidyenawo. Mukungofuna kutiphetsa ndi umphawi pomwe inuyo masalare mukulandira. People are dying out there, and they are not going to eat SECTION 65, they will need good electricity, Roads, ndi zina zotero not section 65. * do agree that this Section needs to be tabled but not at the expense of my grandmothers life. Let the government do its work, your turn will come, some of you it has come to pass that you were busy feeding people to ng'ona and killing them while in captivity. Some of you were busyprundering the governments of its money by making yourselves rich. Bingu thinks of the people first than he thinks of himself. that is what a leader is supposed to be, and not you corrupted idiots! (MCP,UDF)
You are busy blaming government of media bias. Are you forgetting that you guys funded MBC and TVM K1 each?
go back and think twice before you make me sick and tired of your twisted minds.

This is very childish. Malawians let us be mature. Amalawi muli kunja kuno please pitani ku malawi mukapange ndale nkhalambazi zatha nzeru. Lets not leave our beautiful malawi to mediocre, old selfish politicians who have run out of ideas. We need the budget for general election to take place. This is not a domestic issue,it is a national one and if you are called to national duties you must comply to serve the electorate.

It is really shameful for a small country like ours to have leaders who are complicated. The opposition is not just to go agaisnt the government but complimentarity is important. If they are boycotting the session, are they for the people who put them into power or agaisnt them? this is selfishness to the maximum. Let the opposition wait for the elections and then they can talk of 65 issue. The people are more important than 65. Anthuni kumaganiza!!

FORGET ABOUT DEVELOPMENT WITH SUCH LEGISLATORS.THESE ARE TYPICAL ANDALE AND NOT POLITICIANS.WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO.

well, the opposition have a very reason to boycot the opening of parliament bearing in mind that the during the last opening Bingu anayamba kuwaopseza pa za zimene amati akambirane, so they never wanted to be threatened again ngati kuti ndi ana ayi.
it is also high time the President stopped making utterances that may annoy the opposition.Bingu ought to understand the opposition is important in any democratic set-up.* think anchita bwino osapitako.

This is really not developmental. We need to seat down and see things through politically and that would politically develop our land.

* hold the view that section 65 is equally important as any other section in our constitution. So the view that pipo dont eat section 65 is wrong. the role of parliamentarians is not only to pass budget or bills, no!We must accept that section 65 is long overdue and need to be applied now than any later.

To you my opposition mps, Boycott is no solution, move on and confront these guys, we want mature democracy in this land.Nobody should suggest what is very important, you know your job.

Talk budget and bills after section 65.
