SDA forms a Central Malawi Conference

Malawi's Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church President, Dr. Saustin Mfune has described the formation of the church's Central Malawi Conference (CMC) as a big achievement.  

Mfune said the central region has managed to become a conference since it fulfilled a number of criteria among one of which is being financially stable. 

"We are looking at it as a big achievement because it has never happened before. We were only having fields and divisions that were depending on the mother body," Mfune said. 

He explained that by becoming a conference, the central region is now able to make its own decisions such as taking care of their pastors and even paying for their salaries. 

He added that before a division becomes a conference it falls under a union which provides them with all the financial and material support. 

"All churches in the country fall under a Union that provides them with all the financial and material support," he said adding: "Since the central region has become independent in all these areas, from now onwards it will be recognized as a conference." 

The SDA president added that although a division turns into a conference it still reports to the mother body which is the Union. 

He said as a church, they always encourage churches to grow and operate on their own without relying on others. 

"The SDA church is growing so fast in the country. Remember that we clocked hundred years in 2002 so we cannot always rely on donations.  We are encouraging our churches and members to be self reliant," he added.  

church in Malawi is under the Southern Africa Indian Ocean Division and according to Mfune is also advancing towards a conference. 

Chairperson for the CMC, Pastor Dennis Matekenya said the CMC was a milestone for the church in the country since it will change people's mindset and also encourage others from the north and south to emulate the example.
