Mutharika registers to vote in Lilongwe

Malawi's Head of State, Bingu  Mutharika, who in 2004 General Elections registered and voted in his home village of Kamoto in Thyolo, has on Monday registered at the New State House Primary School in Lilongwe in readiness for the 2009 General Elections.

When called to comment on the move of the President to register in
Lilongwe and not in his home district as it the case with most leaders elsewhere, government spokesperson, Patricia Kaliati said there was nothing wrong with the move.

"There is nothing wrong with this development. He is a State President, therefore he can register and vote anywhere in the country," said Kaliati.

This means that Mutharika will not be able to vote for his own blood brother, Peter Mutharika, who is vying for a parliamentary seat in Thyolo district, where they both come from.

After registering, Mutharika then appealed to religious bodies which prevent their followers to participate in issues of national interest like voting, to let their members to register.

"No single church should bar its members to register. This is a national cause and nobody should stop people," said Mutharika.

The President is also said to be building his retiring home at Bineth farm in Mitundu, Lilongwe.

This is strange. How does he ignore his village and opt for the city. Mutharika is a real mtchona who does not believed in his roots. The worst thing is that he thinks his brother has already won, when in elections every single vote is crucial. who knows, he may lose by two votes, and indeed if Mutharika was at kamoto, he should have bolstered the morale of his brother; shame on our president. He thinks he has already won the presidency, ng'ooooo!

This is great and economic. Imagine the entourage that goes with the President whenever he is on trips. Millions would have been spent just for somebody to go and register. Other millions would have been spent on the voting day. So such a saving made and to be made is worthy commending!!!!!!!

News, news and bad politics, probably he will transfer his registration letter before the actual polling. It is always good, as a Head of State, to cast your vote near your home because your very presence in your home area does cajole quite a nomber of people to vote for you. * hope, this is not a ploy to carry out some evil plans because the New State House is next to Kamuzu Barracks and Army Commander Chiziko is a known sworn DPP activist; this would therefore see a quick swearing-in of a President even when the counting of votes is still underway-the Kibaki style. There can never be a better reason for the President, who could have still flown on a helicopter to register at Kamoto, to choose to register in Lilongwe.

* dont see any problem here. Bingu can later transfer and vote in Thyolo. There is a provision for that. The most important thing for now was to register

He has shown to be of no regionalism. He is here to vote for any aspiring MP and to prove that he is not to vote because the one standing is his brother, no, but that voting is the right to every individual. Good example has been shown by Bingu, and let us emulate this example to leave the system of wakwithu. Let us vote for those beleived to perform and not nonstarters. Well done our president. will

The element of regionalism does not apply here but the fact remains that any leader mobilizes from a specific base and a general elections forces that leader to go back and reunite with his or her base. Besides, during general elections that have capacity for a win or a loss, a leader must always do some housekeeping, preparing for the eventuality of losing. It is not normally business as usual because in case of a loss, you have to pack you bags and move out of the State House immediately. in positions of elections, you can never be sure and in the case of Bingu, the odds are against him come 2009.
