Malawi Army officers' residents searched

image Chidziko: Brigadiers wants him jailed for contempt of court

Senior Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officers had their houses searched, Nyasa Times has established Nothing was found during the search and it was not immediately established why the search was conducted.

About ten armed Military Police (MP) Personnel conducted the searched which was headed by  Major Namwela, chief of MDF's Military Police.  The search was not conducted in the main houses of the senior officers but rather their servants' quarters only.

The first house to be searched was that of Brigadier Cosgrove Mituka who is among the other two Brigadiers answering treason charges which were politically motivated.

After Mituka's house the MP's went to the house of military chief spy Brigadier Ruben Ngwenya a neighbour to Mituka and later proceeded to the resident of MDF's chief of Staff Major General Everisto Kadzeya.

Other senior officers who had their servants quarters searched included Brigadier Chimowa, Colonel Clement Namangale, Major General Sefu.

Only senior officers residing in Kamuzu Barracks, MDF Headquarters were searched leaving out those who are residing outside the Barracks.

Military sources confided to Nyasa Times that the search for other houses was a smoke screen  but  main target was the house of Mituka.

Malawi intelligence had earlier gathered that the suspects were keeping evidence relating to  treason fantasy at their servants quarters but the yielded an egg.

Soon after the arrest of the senior officers last May, all cars entering or leaving the Barracks were also roughly  searched for two weeks except cars driven by the MDF commander General Marko Chiziko, his deputy Lieutenant General Ntonya and Major General Kadzeya.

MDF follows the British military system even in its hierarchy of ranks and this is how it is from junior officer to senior officer: 2nd Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier, Major General, Lieutenant General then General.

According to military rules the chief of Staff, in this case Kadzeya accompanied by chief of Military Police is the one who is supposed to arrest any senior officer from the ranks of Colonel and above and take them to a place called officers mess where they await a court marshal.

But that was not the case when Brigadier Juvenalis Mtende and others were arrested. Police constables led the arrest team and later taken to police custody where they stayed for one week.

Currently, Mituka and Brigadier Mtende want MDF's commander Chiziko and other two government senior officers arrested for contempt of court for not reinstating them back to their duties after the two had applied for the renewal of their contract.

Nyasa Times sourced two letters by the two Brigadiers who had applied for renewal of their contract but the Human Resource department said they never got their letters at that showed lack of interest by the two Brigadiers to have their contracts renewed.

In a related development Nyasa Times has gathered that the contract for Brigadier Marcel Chirwa who also answering treason charges has been renewed four months after Chirwa applied for its renewal.

The letter with reference number DOP/CA/132/1/B titled: Renewal of Contract Brigadier General M R D Chirwa, MSM, osc (US) partly reads 'Sir, I have the honour to apprise you that my performance related contract expires on 31st August 2008.  May I take this opportunity to renew for further period of Three Years.

But the MDF General Chiziko - who is an operative of ruling DPP-  applied to the secretary for national Defence on 7th August 2008 24 days before its expiry through Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Chaona in a letter with file number CA/132/1/B.

When granting bail to the three Brigadiers and other senior UDF members, former security officers who were also arrested for planning to overthrow government, Judge Elton Singini gave government until February next year to provide the court with sufficient evidence on how the suspects planned to overthrow government of President Bingu Mutharika or the case will automatically dropped.

Until today government has not tendered any credible evidence prompting former President Bakili Muluzi's demand to have the treason charges levelled against him and other nine dropped.

Muluzi who is  main contender for next year’s presidency had his bail requirements scrapped by the High Court last week effectively making a “free man”.

If anything, let us vote for a person who is matured in brains. Some people though highly educated, are literary naked in the brains on leadership, hence only moving on hallucinations. We have been told lies ever since Bingu was elected as president. Malawi was told, the vice president of Malawi was planning of killing Bingu, and before this case ended in courts, another treason case resumed which is failing even to stand the heat of justice in courts. Therefore, such type of leaders are not wanted in Malawi. Malawi should have sensible leaders, who will transpire the country into prosperty and not moving with trampled and forged cases. These two brigadiers who have not been reinstated, need not panick, 2009 is not far, let them tell their dependants to vote wisely.

Please keep us away from these sensitive security issues. You just dont discuss security issues like that in public. Even in the United States the most democratised and civilised country, there is a limit to what you can say on security.

Let me say that we have heard a lot of searches at people'* houses in the police and the army and let alone civilian households. There are things we need to know and others we do not need to know. There are searches we have all known and obviously those we have not known because its none of our business. This is pure common sense.

This is happening in the military and why should the whole country know? Especially that the search was conducted at servants quarters. And if the reasons for the search are not known why write about it * mean whats the fuss about?

Besides if the letter for Mituka'* renewal was missing where is this "quoted" abstract in the article coming from?

Read about what happened to the Nigerian military.

Any way, nsanje is in Malawian national anthem. Meaning its of concern in the Malawian society. The source of this article is actually from within the military. Someone is insinuating by practicing betrayal and gossip for personal gains. So bad, so bad....

Besides, its funny in Malawi if someone works for the government of the day, some bitter quarters say he is affiliated with the ruling party instead of saying he is affiliated with government. So sad...Its different with seeing Chimbayo or Mphinji going to a UDF caucus almost every weekend and sit with the members.

Anyway zina kambu zina leku, tikambe how the economic crisis will affect Malawi and how we should deal with it as Malawians not searches conducted at servant quarters. Let us know the reason and then write the article. Even the internal military informant did not tell you the reason when it was all happening right in his eyes, in his hood? wow! See you on the other side. Nsanje ithepo apa. Peace!

* like this flame guy. * have followed what he writes its true. But let me say a little bit by saying yes! * heard about the search from a friend who is a son to one of the senior officers. He said the search was conducted because there has been a stream of robberies in the military from households items to other things none military and this is unusual because its been happening for as long as the army has been in existence. And in most cases the thieves are people who live within the barracks and they know things very well. This is either children of soldiers, servants and in almost close to none situations, other soldiers.

So this search was on servants quarters because they are listed suspects and of course its out of question that they least hoped to find stolen stuff at the servant quarters which does not happen in most cases because they have links outside the barracks. It was a matter of getting lead clues. We do not need to know this people. Nothing political as put here. Big up to flame.

* guess the military informant knows what it was but wanted the paper just to make a fuss about it.

Informant, know u are shooting blanks because there is many out there who are shooting live bullets and can give proper positive info. Careful with your lies and insinuation indeed. You wont succeed at all. Malawi army moto moto!

Ayi akuluakulu, MDF ndi yathu its for us and its sponsored by us. There is an extent to which military information must be treated as classified. The contexts within which these searches are being conducted is very important here. Let us not mysify the army. Even elsewhere there is discusssion about military matters in a healthy manner which we cannot dare imagine in our country. What is classified about military personnell in view of everybody visit a house and conduct searches. Just this once * cant see anything wrong with Nyasa carrying this story.
