UK to help Malawi in preparing polls

British High Commissioner to Malawi, Richard Wildash has said Her Majesty Queens Elizabeth II government is committed to support existing institutions to ensure that things are on track as the country prepares for general elections next year.

"We don't want Malawi to go through what people in Kenya and Zimbabwe have seen," said the British envoy.

"That is why we are following with keen interest all developments leading to next year's elections," he said.

President Bingu Mutharika is said reported to have hinted that he will do "a Kibaki" to steal an election victory or pull "a Mugabe" to hold on to power next year if he fails to secure mandate from the electorate.

But British High Commissioner said his government demands free and fair elections next year.

He was speaking during the just ended General Assembly of the Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC).

HRCC former Chairperson, Justin Dzonzi said a lot of civil society organisations in the country lack a sound capacity base to monitor the electoral process.

He therefore asked the British government to broaden the capacity base of the organisations.
