Malawi using Globe, Zain to block website

image Mutharika: Demands Internet restrictions in Malawi

Malawi government is using Globe  and Zain Internet service providers to block access to its URL in the country,Nyasa Times has established.

A statement issued by Managing Director Edgar Msowoya said Internet access to the website, www.nyasatimes.com, “is being blocked” by Globe, the Internet backbone provider for Malawi government. Zain, formerly Celtel is also part of the scheme.

But Minister for Information and Civic Education, Patricia Kaliati expressed her ignorance about the development when asked to comment about the denial of access to the website mostly from government departments.

Similarly, when Kaliati was asked to comment on report that the site had been blocked on the direction of the government, she gave a flimsy denial.Government was also ordering internet service providers to block access to internet websites such as popular discussion forum, Nyasanet.

Government insiders said Security Intelligence Service (SIS) led by Brigadier Reuben Ngwenya has been given strict instructions by President Bingu wa Mutharika to ensure restrictions on access to the Internet.

The security intelligence officers have been assigned in monitoring e-mail and Internet chat rooms with help by Globe internet experts.

Nyasa Times statement warned Internet service providers against being used by government blocking the online publication threatening that it can retaliate.

“We have the potential to retaliate and attack their networks,” said Nyasa Times statement.

“We will brutally force Nyasa Times to filter their networks whether that will mean causing problems to their business, we careless,” the statement said.

“They must stop these Chinese draconian tactics otherwise we have the potential to  bypass their firewalls,” said Nyasa Times statement maintaining that it can fight fire against fire in the worse scenario.

“If need be we will be able to ground their networks to a halt,” said Nyasa Times threatening to launch an internet “Katyusha rocket”.

One of the engineers at Globe Internet said they have been pressured by government for some time to block Nyasa Times.

Meanwhile, Msowoya said Nyasa Times will be creating a dynamic host of IP addresses which will be immune from being blocked by internet service providers.

President Mutharika is said to have been irked following stories Nyasa Times have published exposing him in corrupt deals and about his health problem.

The blocking of the online publication will revive concerns about the country's attitude towards internet censorship and press freedom.

Political analyst Pofela Nyekanyeka regretted the reports of internet restrictions by Mutharika government saying it amounts to “restrictions on academic freedom “.

“The ISPs are better off staying away from these malpractices dictated by government,” said Nyekanyeka.

Malawians access the Internet via a few Internet cafes and offices in the major cities and other individuals have Internet access in their homes.

Under the regime of President Mutharika, Malawians media has suffered great oppression.

Critics of the authorities are systematically pressured into withholding their views, and journalists criticizing the government are often intimidated and harassed.

Please Ngwenya and Kapalamula don'* remind us those days of dictatorship during one Party state. Where is the Freedom of Expression here? This is not true that government is blocking your website. The truth is that in Malawi there isnt any ISP who provide good servises all the time there is poor signals. * think Malawi government should think about this.

KODI INU A NYASA TIMES MUSATITOPETSE NDI NKHANI IMENEYI MWAMVA? THEE ARE A LOT OF ISSUE HAPPENING IN MALAWI WORTH REPORTING. YOUR WEBSITE IS HOSTED BY VS077.ROSEHOSTING.*** (WITH AN IP ADDRESS 216.114.78.77 AS OF TODAY INCASE YOU USE DHCP FOR ASSIGNING IP-ADDRESSES) BASED IN THE UNITED STATES, IN SAINT LOUIS, AREA CODE 314. THE ONLY WAY GOVERNMENT CAN BLOCK YOUR WEBSITE IS BY LIASING WITH THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL GOVERNEMENT TO BALCKLIST YOUR WEBSITE IF IT SEES IT FIT OR BY USING APPLICATION FIREWALLS WHICH ARE SOMETIMES CALLED PROXY SERVERS IN GOVERNMENT NETWORKS. GOVERNMENT CAN ONLY ACHIEVE THIS BY IMPLEMENTING SUCH FIREWALLS IN ITS DEPARTMENTAL /MINISTRIES IF REALLY GOVERNEMENT IS DOING THIS IN ITS OFFICES, WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING? ANY ORGANISATION CAN FILTER WHAT CONTENT SHOULD GET INTO THEIR NETWORK AND THIS DOES NOT EXCLUDE GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS. THIS IS THE SAME WAY YOU WOULD NOT ALLOW PORNOGRAPHIC MATERIALS GOING INTO YOUR NETWORK.
IS NYASATIMES TARGETTING GOVERNMENT? YOU LOOK SO WORRIED WITH THIS AND * DO NOT KNOW THE REASONS BEHIND, MAY BE YOU CAN EXPLAIN.
THE ONLY POSSIBLE WAY GOVERNEMENT WOULD DO THIS IS IF AND ONLY IF WE HAD ONE GATWAY FOR INTERNET ACCESS JUST AS IS THE CASE IN OTHER COUNTRIES LIKE ZIMBABWE AND ETHIOPIA. IN MALAWI PEOPLE HAVE VSATS THAT CONNECTS DIRECTLY TO INTERNATIONAL ISPS AND GOVERNMENT CAN DO NOTHING TO BLOCK YOUR WEBSITE.
SOMEEBODY WHETHER YOUR ISP OR YOUR STAFF IS INCOMPETENT IN MANAGING YOUR SITE. CYBER ATTACKS ARE INEVITABLE YOU JUST HAVE TO DEAL WITH THEM

Its network issues people. But besides that, * think Malawians exposed here should start taking legal actions for defamation, trespassing and invasion of privacy and the like just the way celebrities and individuals do all over the world. This paper goes too far more often than not. Lawyers like Kasambara Im telling you there is more bucks to be made in these cases other than zigzagging between gvt and opposition if one side doesnt work.
Where are you lawyers instead of lobbying for laws to protect citizens.

Well it all comes to this. It all shows who the boss is. But hey, if government depts cannot view this paper, the network admins can also block it at the network level in their organizations. * do not think its hard to do this at all people. Government hire me to do this job * am a great IT man.
And besides, ask yourselves, if government is blocking you, why not argue in court than revert to arms to protect yourselves just in persistence huuh! If you are statesmen, go start something else. * do not think there is any money value from running and administering this website. It looks like a charity site to me.
This is the mind we do not want just exactly what is happening in congo. Its the same. Instead of a 'soft' approach, pple are reverting to arms. Archive the site in history and then go do some else and it will be your great history one day than opting to fight with govt by deploying tools and techniques to combat the blockage. Do not force matters.

But we do not want you to go. Just be professional, accountable and responsible like 'fox television' in USA bucks republicans but is still watchable. peace!

Do not worry gentlemen,Globe provides internet to government which means the government is using their link to surf. This does not affect other ISPs cause they have their own servers and network. For one to have internet you have an option of choosing your ISP.The ISP then will help you to access internet using their servers and these are the ones who can decide which websites to block for that particular user of the internet *.e government.Zain provides GPRS to their users and if they decide to block the users, they can do so because the users are using the Zain'* network.Zimayenda choncho, ngati Cafe yako mwachitsanzo is using Globe and you have noted that you are failing to access nyasatimes,do not worry just switch the ISP say you go to SDNP,you will be ok and Globe will be in problems because they will lose customers.Sichocho nanga?Tiyeni tipitirize kuwerenga nkhani zabwinozi pa nyasatimes.

THAT is good news following Nyasatimes turning into a tubloid website. * am not surprised with the move if it is true because my work place were already instructed to block Nyasatimes long time ago after it had published ponographic images of some alegations. The government of Malawi should be encouraged to block ISP allowing people to browse such websites.

This is not called intimidation but following right procedures for filtering unwanted images and sites that publish such.

* am not surprised, the Government should take some sort of action against Nyasa Times

In my opinion,Nyasa Time'* political and economical publications are at most very misleading, biased. Therefore Nyasa Times publications have no credibility and are unreliable. As a public online news paper it confuses the public and raise unnecessary public anxieties and uncertainties. This is not good for the nation. * would recommend Nyasa Times to be an entertainment and public opinion blog for people to share their opinions and ideas, other than telling us their findings which most of them are incomprehensible due to lack of appropriate use of English and mass media ethics.

Examples: look at the heading for HIV/Counseling campaign.
A recent report on credit crunch affecting Malawi and publications by Nyakuchema...cant remember his surname.

* would suggest Nyasa times stick to entertainment.

Secondly * hear you will use dynamic addressing of Nyasatimes website, well that wouldn'* neccessarily work in your favour, would it? * don’* understand Tyrant, arrogant, persecutor and drunkard Mutharika. Mutharika should comprehend that his intimidation tactics are only workable in One Party State and can not be applied in Democratic Malawi whatsoever.

Mutharika has shamefully failed to close Joy Radio and now he is tempting to block Nyasa Times of which he can not achieve.

Mutharika the Website has so many ways of surpassing blockage, for your information technology is advancing day and night. Some of things which Nyasa Times can do are already in practice here in UK. * will not disclose them but you will see when you try your failed “Chinese/ Tibet Strategy”.

Moreover according to Intelligence information gathered from Ntaba, Chimuthu Banda and Godall Gondwe, indicates that the health status of Mutharika is deteriorating gradually. They further said in some Cabinet meetings Mutharika behaves abnormal due to intensive medication.

The same information reveals that currently Mutharika is always wearing oversized attire because he carries Caftan which helps him to toilet and urinate.

Mutharika for all atrocities you have committed do not cheat yourself that you will be punished in heaven, No, No you will be punish on earth in Malawi so that all your victims should see.

Mutharika learn to be objective with your Zambian citizenship, why are you not renouncing it. If you will not * will challenge your candidature in court.

Watch out!!!

The gov. is shooting itself in the foot.

Firstly by blocking the site it will generate a lot of interest. Are the oficials going to be refuting reports on a blocked site?

Secondly stories still spread. Those who will ahve access will still send e-mails. phone calls to those whom you have blocked. No work done.

If ISP'* continue carrying out gov.orders, it is definately going to affect their business. The customer base in Malawi is very small mind you. Basically you are scaring away potential investors.

UDF gov. tried to do the same even tracking contributors, it failed. If Nyasatimes is very critical, irresponsible, etc it is still source of information. It'* not difficult to separate opinions from facts.

Even al-Qaeda sites are not blocked by highly capable agencies - reason? they are a valuable source of information for their enemies. Mukuganiza mobwerera mmbuyo.
