Mutharika, Muluzi urged to burry hatchets
Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika and his predecessor Bakili Muluzi have been persuaded to burry political differences as the country approaches May general elections to ensure continued peace and stability.
The call was sounded by human rights campaigner, Billy Banda who is executive director of Malawi Watch following a bitter disparage through letters exchanged between the two leaders.
In the correspondence now in public domain, the President accuses his predecessor of spreading many “lies” among other things that Mutharika is suffering from prostate cancer and in turn writes that he knows Muluzi is a sick man.
The former president pointed out in his reply that he has since being cured of disc problems which "came about because of the grueling campaign of 2004 that I had undertaken on Your Excellency’s behalf".
But speaking on Day Break Malawi programme of Capital FM Radio, Banda called for “reconciliation” amongst the two leaders.
“The two leaders have not done fairness to our society. In the first place I think the letter from President to the former president has a lot to be desired and the tone itself has quite a number of issues that the society could not realy like. I could say it’s very sad development,” said Banda.
He said the exchange of the letters confirmed that the rift between two leaders are beyond repairable.
“In my personal opinion, there is an issue of lack of- maybe- appreciation by president against the former president. Honestly speaking, Muluzi gave Malawians a good leader and we should acknowledge that,” said Malawi Watch head.
“Bingu is one good leader who has made tremendous contribution to our economy; who has also brought about food security and also who has improved a number of social aspect in our country,” he noted.
Banda highlighted that President Mutharika should lead Malawians in recognizing that Muluzi - who ruled Malawi after after regime change from one party dictatorship of Ngwazi Kamuzu Banda to mulit-party democracy - played a very important role to make Malawians achieve what they could not have attained if there was another leader.
Malawi Watch director however expressed dismay that the President‘s letter lacked decorum.
“The tone of the later was not reconciliatory,” Banda said.
In the letter, the Head of State threatened to arrest Muluzi if privately owned online publication Nyasa Times and any other media continue writing about Mutharika’s health concern.
Banda said the letters exchanged by President Mutharika and former president Muluzi are of public interest.
Another human rights activist Nigel Mwalweni concurred with Malawi Watch observation that the two leaders should reconcile.
“Malawians are being held on ransom for the differences of the two –Mutharika and Muluzi. For the sake of the nation the two should talk and end their turf,” said Mwalweni.
But Pofela Nyekanyela a political scientist said reconciliation at the time elections are nearing would not be a possibility.
“I cannot see reconciliation working. These are main competitors in the polls and only the ballot will solve the problem or even aggravate it further,” said Nyekanyeka.
He said Malawi was facing such an awkward situation because of “old timers still clinging to power.”
“Both Muluzi and Mutharika will be contesting the presidency for the third time in 2009. Muluzi had a first go in 1994 and then in 1999. While Mutharika first attempt was a miserable 1999 and he contested for the second time in 2004 and next May will be his third consecutive attempt for presidency. Perhaps, Malawi needs a new generation of leaders and both Mutharika and Muluzi should honourably leave the political stage,” said Nyekanyeka.
Mutharika was handpicked by Muluzi for the United Democratic Front (UDF) presidential candidacy in the 2004 elections. Mutharika then dumped UDF soon afterwards and formed his Democratic Progressive Party bolstered by former UDF members.

Ngwazi tried to sucumb to presure from the likes of UDF gurus up to until he threww a tawel and form his party. These human right groups commended the president for coming out of the party. Its pity that despite all the soils leveled at Ngwazi in the past he is holding the blame. What * can say is that what these two big people agreed and disagreed is known to them. so for Billy to act as a Prophet and give a blame on the good leader is a shame. Please Billy, call a spade a spade.
Muluzi wanted to remove this good leader - and is a fact. Muluzi and friends wanted the good leader dead - and is a fact - Muluzi wanted this country to be unmanageable - and this is true fact - Muluzi wanted to be ruling this country forever through the back of our good leader - and this is very true. So what is coming from the president is the collection of all bad things Muluzi and his UUU are doing on him - which we can not see with our naked eyes. So just to analyse on the letter is not a fair game. First you should have analysed what prompted the president to write the way he did.
Pano tikupita ku zisankho. Already your favourite
Muluzi will have problem because he will no longer rule the parliament the way he did. So he is trying to get more sympathizers including Honarable Billy. Take care
Mukamayankhula mumakhala ngati oduka mitu bwanji. We are talking about the problems in Zimbabwe right now.But mind you Zimbabwe can turn back to normal in few years. What about Malawi which is naturaly poor and yet somebody claims to be staying well in MALAWI.Thats BLASPHEMY!!
Bingu has totally failed and he knows he will not sail the elections next year.Ife sitimufuna koma ALKHO AALOMWE achina Elvis Masangwi,Noel Masangwi,Leston Mulli,Felton Mulli,Patricia Kaliati,Ken Lipenga.Anna Kachikho,
Think about makadi evn the un born babies, anthu kubisala mchitedze kuthawa msonkho, that was not good at all. tell me if Bingu won in 1999, do you think he was going to change that? Do you think he was going to bring the Tv Station,Radio Station, etc absolutely not. See what he is doing presently against thge media. Anyway my personal view is we should allow Muluzi to rule malawi again so that the freedom many people fought for including the late Chihana should not die.
Muluzi * wish you all the best.
Hope Undule Mwakasungula and Emmie Chamika, just to mention a few will help identify the ideal institution. The idea is to resolve the political differences our Politicians have. This should also be extended to Tembo, and Gwanda. We don’* want civil war. We don’* ant to destroy the good reputation of Mother Malawi that took Olton Chirwa, Kamuzu Banda and many more others to build. We don’* want to go and seek refuge in Mozambique.
Bingu never ever intended to dump or antagonise the UDF. He was forced for refusing to be told how to run this country. He has the right and the duty to do so as head of state.
Muluzi has always wanted to stay in power - impposing Bingu was only to use him as a puppet - someone he never knew at all! Daft! Thankfully, Bingu was indeed Gods choice.
Muluzi has one mission-and one mision only-to remove Bingu from power. That is not in the interest of Malawians! Billy Banda of Malawi Watch is intentionally ignoring this fact and trying to portray Muluzi as a statesman. He is not. In all fairness Muluzi will have done him a favour by stepping aside and focus on his business. Muluzi failed on the economy, corruption, Food security, Rule of Law, etc. * cannot see him becoming the champion of something he could not do in 10 full years. Mr Banda inu mwangofuna kubwebweta apa. You are simply trying to mislead us. We know where all this started. Let elections and the courts resolve these issues, not these so called ''independent'' NGOs. Anyamatawa angofuna kudyapo nawo basi.
Mzara.
